The Yolŋu traditional landowners of East Arnhem practice one of the oldest living cultures in the world and have been living in this region for more than 60,000 years. The entirety of East Arnhem Land is Aboriginal land granted under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976, an important acknowledgement of the continuing ownership of, and connection to country.
About DEAL and the East Arnhem region
Developing East Arnhem Limited (DEAL) is an independent not-for-profit organisation established to facilitate investment and economic development opportunities in East Arnhem between Yolŋu Traditional Owners, local organisations and businesses, governments, and investors.
Situated in Nhulunbuy, DEAL works across the East Arnhem region and is uniquely positioned to drive development and investment opportunities to smooth the transition to a diversified economy that grows and strengthens local jobs and communities.
East Arnhem is transitioning from dependence on the long-term Rio Tinto operations on the Gove Peninsula, due to end by the end of the decade. This transition will leave a unique infrastructure and economic legacy for East Arnhem that is capable of being leveraged to develop a thriving and sustainable regional economy which creates local jobs for future generations.
Position Purpose
Reporting to the Manager, Tourism Development, and working in a small, dynamic and collaborative team, the Tourism Development Officer will be responsible for supporting sustainable tourism development in East Arnhem region. This includes the development of new tourism products and experiences, working with and supporting existing, new and emerging tourism operators.
This is a hands-on role which involves working side-by-side with Aboriginal tourism operators to provide specialist advice to improve visitor experience and build capacity of the local workforce and industry to deliver authentic and engaging tourism experiences.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
Provide specialist and practical advice to existing, new and emerging tourism operators to enhance their product offering and improve visitor experience.
Together with the Manager, Tourism, attend key stakeholder meetings to support sustainable tourism development and support the delivery of strategic projects.
Identify and develop attractions, activities and assets, accommodation offerings, and other product development opportunities and improvements that positively contribute to overall visitor experience.
Provide advice to tourism operators to develop tourism products and support growth in the depth and breadth of available products in the region.
Proactively work alongside tourism operators to workshop ideas, discuss tourism opportunities and assist in navigating available supports, including business support, acting as a conduit and providing introductions to Tourism NT and key partners.
Provide advice and support to promote awareness of tourism distribution.
Identify real, potential and/or perceived barriers to product development and take steps to mitigate these barriers.
Mentor and build capacity within new and emerging tourism operators.
Assist the Manager, Tourism Development in the delivery of key actions identified in the East Arnhem Land Destination Management Plan.
Proactively keep up to date with tourism insights, travel trends, opportunities and challenges that may impact the East Arnhem tourism industry.
Support tourism content creation and implementation of regional tourism marketing initiatives.
Representation at tourism industry events, including travel to Darwin and other locations.
Undertake other duties as directed by the Manager, Tourism Development, including administrative tasks such as report writing, preparing grant applications and supporting documentation.

Knowledge and Experience
Education, Qualifications & Licenses
Relevant professional experience and/or tertiary qualifications in Tourism or Business Management that enhance your ability to support tourism development.
Current Australian drivers license
National Police Check
Working with Children Ochre card
Skills & Experience & Attributes
Demonstrated experience working with tourism operators and/or delivering tourism experiences.
Demonstrated experience developing tourism products in regional and remote areas.
A strong understanding of the Northern Territory and East Arnhem Land tourism industry.
Willingness and capacity to establish a high level of cultural competency in working with the Yolŋu people of the region, in addition to working with industry, business and the wider community.

Willing to travel via 4WD and light plane to remote communities.
