The Role
We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead and develop a high-performing engineering function within a fast-paced distribution environment.
This role is responsible for the overall management of a multi-skilled engineering team, ensuring maximum equipment availability, operational continuity, and delivery against departmental KPIs. You will drive continuous improvement, manage budgets, maintain statutory compliance, and build a culture focused on performance, accountability, and reliability.
This is a leadership position that requires both strategic oversight and operational involvement.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Department Management
- Lead, manage and motivate the engineering department.
- Ensure delivery of departmental objectives and KPIs.
- Develop Engineering Team Leaders and support structured development plans.
- Conduct effective briefings and departmental presentations.
- Promote a results-driven, accountable team culture.
- Manage workload planning and resource allocation across the function.
Maintenance Strategy & Operational Reliability
- Develop and manage a robust Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) strategy in line with manufacturer recommendations.
- Ensure rapid and effective fault response aligned to operational requirements.
- Oversee rectification of electrical, mechanical, control, pneumatic and hydraulic faults (via internal or external resource).
- Ensure site protection standards are maintained, including fire protection systems and fixed wire installations.
- Ensure all technical documentation and engineering drawings remain up to date.
- Plan maintenance requirements for future business projects and expansion.
Budget & Financial Control
- Set and manage departmental budgets in line with company procedures.
- Forecast future financial year expenditure.
- Attend monthly finance meetings and manage cost control effectively.
- Source and benchmark suppliers to ensure competitive pricing for spares and services.
- Maintain accurate spares stock holding and auditing processes.
Continuous Improvement & Performance
- Analyse monthly performance data and identify improvement opportunities.
- Drive operational efficiency and process improvements.
- Minimise major equipment failures impacting productivity and customer fulfilment.
- Reduce reliance on specialist third-party breakdown support through capability building.
- Maintain high levels of staff engagement and commitment.
Compliance & Governance
- Ensure full compliance with statutory legislation and health & safety standards.
- Oversee risk assessments and safe systems of work.
- Ensure all reporting, payroll, and administrative requirements are completed accurately.
Technical Knowledge & Experience
Essential:
- HNC in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
- Proven experience in a leadership or management role within an engineering function.
- Strong background in operational or distribution environments.
- Demonstrated track record of driving process improvement.
- Experience managing departmental budgets.
- Strong fault-finding knowledge across electrical, mechanical, control, pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
- Ability to analyse data and produce detailed performance reports.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Confident using Word, Excel (including basic formulas), and PowerPoint.
Desirable:
- Knowledge of supply chain operations (inbound, outbound, distribution, ecommerce).
- Experience sourcing and benchmarking suppliers.
- Strong influencing and change management capability.
