Senior Substation Engineer
The Senior Substation Engineer will lead the development and delivery of engineering design solutions for new and modified high-voltage electrical power substations ranging from 13kV to 765kV. This role partners closely with multidisciplinary project teams throughout design and construction, ensuring engineering plans are aligned with budget, schedule, technical requirements, and client expectations.
Key Responsibilities

Lead substation projects from conceptual development through detailed design, construction support, and project closeout.

Direct the preparation and development of comprehensive substation design packages, including physical arrangements (above and below grade), protective relaying and controls, electrical studies (grounding, lightning protection), and lighting and security systems.

Lead the development of engineering calculations such as insulation coordination, AC station service, DC systems and battery sizing, voltage drop, cable sizing, and conduit fill.

Prepare and review design sketches, cost estimates, equipment specifications, bills of material, and other required technical deliverables.

Apply advanced knowledge of IEEE, NESC, and other applicable industry and utility standards, specifications, and procedures.

Conduct and lead field inspections for substation facilities on public and private utility systems.

Execute complex engineering assignments using advanced tools and techniques, contributing to the development of improved processes, equipment, and technical methodologies.

Identify project issues, communicate risks, and lead resolution efforts to maintain project objectives.

Manage project schedules and budgets for assigned deliverables under supervision.

Collaborate closely with project teams to ensure deliverables meet client expectations and comply with internal QA/QC requirements.

Perform and participate in design quality and constructability reviews.

Interface directly with clients and external stakeholders to build and maintain strong working relationships.

Lead proposal development efforts, including preparation of technical scope, schedules, and budget estimates.

Perform other duties as assigned and comply with all company policies and standards.
Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline from an ABET-accredited program and a minimum of 7 years of substation or related project experience; consulting experience preferred
OR
Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related discipline from an ABET-accredited program, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and a minimum of 7 years of substation or related project experience; consulting experience preferred. -
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
