Role Purpose
The Material Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the right materials, spares, and consumables are available at the right time to support mining, processing, maintenance, and shutdown activities. The role focuses on material readiness, coordination between departments, and proactive expediting to prevent delays, downtime, and production losses.
Key Responsibilities
Material Coordination & Readiness
- Coordinate availability of engineering spares, consumables, tools, and critical materials for planned and breakdown work
- Ensure materials are ready and staged ahead of scheduled maintenance and shutdown activities
- Act as the link between planning, stores, procurement, and operations to ensure material alignment
- Prevent work delays caused by material shortages or incorrect issues
Planning & Maintenance Support
- Work closely with maintenance planners to understand material requirements for weekly, monthly, and shutdown work
- Review job plans and material lists to ensure completeness and accuracy
- Confirm material availability before work is scheduled for execution
- Support emergency and breakdown material coordination
Stores & Inventory Interface
- Liaise with stores and inventory control to verify stock availability and correctness
- Support identification of critical, fast‑moving, and long‑lead spares
- Assist with kitting of materials for planned work and shutdown activities
- Support stock optimisation and reduction of duplicate or obsolete items
Procurement & Expediting Support
- Coordinate with procurement and expeditors on outstanding and critical purchase orders
- Track delivery status of long‑lead and high‑risk materials
- Escalate potential delays and propose alternative solutions
- Support vendor communication for technical clarification where required
Shutdowns & Project Support
- Coordinate material readiness for planned shutdowns, campaigns, and capital projects
- Ensure materials are ordered, delivered, staged, and issued as required
- Track material usage during shutdowns and support post‑shutdown reconciliation
- Capture lessons learned to improve future shutdown material planning
Systems & Documentation
- Ensures accurate material reservations, issues, and returns in ERP / CMMS systems
- Maintain material coordination logs and readiness checklists
- Support material cost tracking and committed spend visibility
- Provide data for audits, reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives
Safety, Health & Compliance
- Comply with the Mine Health & Safety Act (MHSA) and site SHE procedures
- Ensure safe handling, storage, and staging of materials
- Maintain good housekeeping in material laydown and staging areas
- Ensure compliance with company supply chain and governance policies
Reporting & Continuous Improvement
- Report material readiness status and risks to planning and operations teams
- Track material‑related delays and root causes
- Support continuous improvement of material coordination and supply workflows
- Promote proactive planning and cross‑departmental collaboration
Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma in Supply Chain, Logistics, Engineering, or Maintenance Management, or equivalent experience
- Minimum 3–5 years' experience in materials coordination, planning, or supply chain, preferably in mining or heavy industry
- Good understanding of engineering spares, maintenance workflows, and shutdown planning
- Experience working with ERP / CMMS systems
Desirable
- Experience in zinc or base‑metal mining operations
- Exposure to processing plants and/or underground mining environments
- Knowledge of inventory optimisation and critical spares management
