Job Purpose

The Dayshift Electrical Assistant supports qualified electricians and supervisors by assisting with day‑to‑day electrical maintenance, installations, inspections, and housekeeping activities, ensuring safe, compliant, and reliable electrical systems during normal operating hours on the zinc mining operation.

Key Responsibilities

Safety, Health & Compliance

  • Work in accordance with Mine Health and Safety legislation, site rules, and electrical procedures.
  • Adhere to lock‑out/tag‑out, isolations, permit‑to‑work, and area access requirements.
  • Wear prescribed personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Identify and report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, and hazards.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, risk assessments, and safety meetings.

Electrical Maintenance Support

Assist electricians with:

  • Planned and preventive maintenance activities
  • Minor electrical repairs under supervision
  • Electrical installations and removals

Support work on:

  • Motors and motor control equipment
  • Lighting and small power systems
  • Cable pulling, routing, tagging, and termination preparation
  • Carry tools, materials, and spares to work areas as required.

Plant & Housekeeping Standards

  • Maintain clean and orderly electrical rooms, MCC rooms, and work areas.
  • Assist with cleaning of motors, panels, and electrical equipment.
  • Ensure electrical tools and equipment are stored correctly and safely.

Operational & Maintenance Support

  • Provide support to dayshift maintenance activities to ensure scheduled work is completed.
  • Assist during electrical faults or breakdowns occurring during day operations.
  • Support maintenance teams during shutdowns and project work when required.

Learning & Skills Development

  • Gain practical on‑the‑job experience under supervision.
  • Attend training sessions, inductions, and development programmes.
  • Work towards increased competency and potential artisan or trade training where applicable.

Administration & Reporting

  • Assist with completion of basic job cards, checklists, and inspection reports.
  • Report faults, defects, or abnormal conditions to electricians or supervisors.
  • Assist with spares handling and basic material recording.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 10–12 or equivalent
  • Basic understanding of workplace safety
  • Ability to follow instructions and work procedures
  • Medically fit for mine work

Advantageous

  • Electrical assistant or pre‑apprenticeship training
  • Basic experience with hand tools
  • Exposure to mining or industrial plant environments

Experience Requirements

  • 2 years experience in an industrial, mining, or technical environment preferred
  • Suitable for entry‑level candidates

Technical Skills & Knowledge

  • Basic electrical tool handling
  • Identification of common electrical components
  • Understanding of housekeeping and contamination control
  • Awareness of electrical safety principles
