About the job HDPE Artisan
Role Purpose
The HDPE Artisan is responsible for the installation, welding, repair, maintenance, and testing of High‑Density Polyethylene (HDPE) piping systems across the zinc mining and processing operation. The role supports safe, reliable transport of slurry, water, tailings, reagents, and process services in compliance with safety, quality, and engineering standards.
Key Responsibilities
HDPE Installation & Fabrication
Install HDPE piping systems for:
- Slurry and tailings lines
- Process water and return water systems
- Reagent, air, and services pipelines
- Drainage and dewatering systems
- Perform butt fusion, electrofusion, and socket welding of HDPE pipes and fittings
- Read and interpret piping drawings, isometrics, and specifications
- Set out pipelines and ensure correct alignment, support, and anchoring
Maintenance & Repairs
- Inspect HDPE pipelines for leaks, wear, deformation, and damage
- Perform repairs and modifications on existing HDPE installations
- Replace damaged pipes, fittings, valves, and joints
- Assist during breakdowns and emergency pipeline failures to restore plant operation
Testing & Quality Control
- Conduct pressure testing and leak testing of HDPE pipelines
- Ensure weld integrity and compliance with quality standards
- Complete welding records, test certificates, and inspection documentation
- Maintain tooling, welding machines, and calibration records
Safety, Health & Compliance
- Comply with the Mine Health & Safety Act (MHSA) and site safety procedures
- Perform job risk assessments and follow permit‑to‑work systems
- Ensure safe isolation of pipelines prior to work
- Use correct PPE and follow hot‑work and confined‑space requirements
- Promote good housekeeping and safe work practices
Teamwork & Operational Support
- Work closely with maintenance, operations, and project teams
- Support shutdowns, expansions, and capital projects
- Provide technical input on pipeline design improvements
- Assist with mentoring junior artisans or assistants
Qualifications & Experience
- Recognised HDPE Welding / Fabrication Certification (Butt Fusion & Electrofusion)
- Trade qualification (Fitter, Boilermaker, or similar) or proven HDPE artisan experience
- Minimum 3–5 years' experience in HDPE pipeline installation and maintenance
- Experience working in mining, processing plant, or heavy industrial environments
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings
Desirable
- Experience in zinc or base‑metal mining operations
- Exposure to slurry, tailings, and process water systems
- Valid working‑at‑heights and confined‑space certification
Skills & Competencies
- High level of HDPE welding and fabrication skill
- Strong attention to detail and quality workmanship
- Good understanding of process plant services
- Strong safety awareness and compliance discipline
- Ability to work independently and under pressure
