Job Purpose

The Training Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing, and monitoring all training and skills development activities across the zinc mining and processing operation. The role ensures that employees, contractors, and site personnel are competent, legally compliant, and equipped to perform their duties safely, efficiently, and in line with operational requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Training Planning & Coordination

  • Develop, maintain, and monitor the Annual Training Plan (ATP) aligned to business, production, legal, and operational readiness requirements.
  • Coordinate induction, refresher, statutory, role-specific, and safety-critical training for employees and contractors.
  • Schedule internal and external training activities to minimise disruption to mining and plant operations.
  • Liaise with Management, Supervisors, HR, Safety, Operations, and Maintenance teams to identify training needs and competency gaps.
  • Ensure training plans support safe start-up, commissioning, ramp-up, and steady-state operational requirements.

Legal & Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with applicable Mine Health and Safety legislation, mandatory training requirements, and site competency standards.
  • Maintain records for statutory and mandatory training including:
    • Mine induction
    • First aid
    • Risk awareness
    • Mobile equipment operator competency
    • Working at heights
    • Confined space entry
    • Fire awareness and emergency response
    • Isolation and permit-to-work awareness
  • Support audits and inspections by ensuring training compliance evidence is accurate, current, and readily available.

Training Administration & Records

  • Maintain accurate training matrices, attendance registers, certificates, licences, and learner records.
  • Capture and update training data on the Learning Management System (LMS), training database, or site training register.
  • Track expiry dates of certificates, licences, and mandatory competencies and coordinate renewals timeously.
  • Ensure training documentation is controlled, filed, and audit ready.

Skills Development & Competency

  • Support implementation of skills development programmes, learnerships, apprenticeships, bursaries, and workplace learning initiatives.
  • Coordinate assessments of competence, practical evaluations, and workplace signoffs.
  • Support Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) processes where applicable.
  • Assist departments in closing competency gaps linked to safety, production, maintenance, and plant performance.

Contractor & Visitor Training

  • Coordinate contractor onboarding and ensure contractor employees meet site induction and competency requirements before commencing work.
  • Ensure visitors receive appropriate safety induction and site-specific awareness.
  • Maintain contractor training records and ensure compliance with site access requirements.

Training Quality & Effectiveness

  • Monitor the quality, relevance, and effectiveness of training interventions.
  • Collect feedback and conduct post-training evaluations.
  • Recommend improvements to training content, delivery methods, and competency verification processes.
  • Ensure training supports a proactive safety culture and consistent work execution standards.

Reporting & Communication

  • Compile monthly and quarterly training reports for Management, HR, Safety, and Operational teams.
  • Communicate training schedules, requirements, gaps, and changes across departments.
  • Support compliance reporting for internal, client, and corporate requirements.
  • Provide visibility of training progress against the Annual Training Plan and statutory compliance matrix.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Grade 12 / Matric.
  • Training, Skills Development, or HR Development qualification.
  • OD ETDP, Skills Development Facilitator, HRD Certificate/Diploma, or equivalent qualification preferred.
  • Registered Assessor and/or Moderator will be advantageous.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate will be advantageous.
  • Valid driver's licence preferred.

Experience Required

  • Minimum 3–5 years' experience in a training, learning, or skills development coordination role.
  • Experience in mining, mineral processing, or heavy industrial operations is essential.
  • Exposure to base metal operations such as zinc, copper, or lead will be advantageous.
  • Experience coordinating statutory, safety-critical, and contractor training will be beneficial.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Good understanding of mine training, competency, and statutory compliance requirements.
  • Knowledge of safety-critical and production-critical training requirements.
  • Strong planning, organising, scheduling, and follow-up capability.
  • Excellent administration, document control, and record-keeping skills.
  • Computer literate in MS Office, LMS platforms, and training databases.
  • Strong communication, coordination, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work across departments and influence training compliance.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong compliance and zero-harm mindset.
