The Council for International Development Aotearoa (CID) is the national umbrella organisation for New Zealands international development and humanitarian sector. They coordinate, support, and advocate for a diverse network of members working to alleviate poverty and promote sustainable development in Aotearoa, the Pacific, and globally.
CID plays a unique convening role strengthening the voice, capability, and connectedness of civil society organisations through promotion of high standards of practice, influencing policy through collective advocacy, and cultivates inclusive partnerships with members and stakeholders, including government entities, tangata whenua, Pacific communities, academia, businesses, and multilateral agencies.
CID affirms the importance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in shaping inclusive development practice in Aotearoa and abroad.
An exciting opportunity to join CID as their new Executive Director is now available. For this position we seek candidates with outstanding leadership, organisational and planning skills as well as the ability to develop and nurture strong working relationships with their members and a range of key stakeholders
The Role:
The Executive Director provides strategic leadership and coordination across New Zealand's international development and humanitarian sector. The role strengthens the capability, voice, and impact of CIDs members by supporting collaboration, promoting good development practice, and building trusted relationships across government, civil society, Māori and Pacific communities, and the wider public.
As Executive Director you will lead CID to deliver on its vision: a connected, credible, and capable sector working together for sustainable development and humanitarian outcomes.
The Executive Director holds responsibility for delivery on CIDs multi-year MFAT funding agreement, ensuring effective reporting, performance and partnership alignment.

What you will bring to this role:
- A deep understanding of New Zealand's international development and humanitarian landscape
- Demonstrated mana and credibility in Māori and Pacific contexts; culturally grounded and relationally wise
- Strategic agility and ability to connect vision with operational excellence
- Experience leading within member-based, not-for-profit, or advocacy-driven organisation's
- Excellent interpersonal, convening, and communication skills across diverse audiences
- Values-driven leadership style grounded in humility, service, and collaboration
Your qualifications and experience:
Essential:
- Senior leadership experience in the NGO, public, or mission-driven sectors
- Proven ability to lead teams, manage organisational functions, and work with a Board
- Demonstrated experience working with Māori and/or Pacific communities and commitment to Te Tiriti
- Strong advocacy and stakeholder engagement track record
- Graduate qualification in a relevant field (e.g., development, public policy, leadership, or related disciplines)
Desirable:
- Experience working in international development, humanitarian response, or allied sectors
- Experience within a member-based or peak body organisation
- Understanding of Aotearoa's political and public sector environment
- Experience in cross-sector partnerships or systems leadership
We are seeking a strategic leader with strong values and dedication to CIDs mission. You should have proven leadership experience in not-for-profit, government, membership, or humanitarian service organisation's, along with excellent judgement, business skills, and governance expertise.
