We are currently recruiting for a forward-thinking law firm seeking an experienced Head of Conveyancing to lead and manage their residential property department in Reading.

This is a unique opportunity for a senior-level conveyancer who wants to transition into a departmental leadership role, combining hands-on file handling with strategic team management and operational oversight.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the Conveyancing department across administrative and fee-earning teams.
  • Oversee and run a reduced caseload (with support), including complex transactions.
  • Ensure smooth delivery of services aligned with regulatory, CQS, and SLA requirements.
  • Implement and improve systems, case management processes, and operational protocols.
  • Deliver high-level client service while leading by example.
  • Monitor KPIs, performance targets, completion rates, and departmental billing.
  • Work closely with senior leadership to execute the firms strategic goals.
  • Coach, develop, and performance-manage staff, including PDPs, 1:1s, and appraisals.
  • Drive departmental growth through new business opportunities and referral relationships.
  • Manage compliance checks, identity verification, and internal audits.
  • Handle onboarding, desk planning, recruitment admin, and systems support within the team.

Requirements

  • 5+ years' experience in residential conveyancing is essential.
  • Proven experience managing all transaction types, including:

    • Freehold & leasehold
    • Registered & unregistered titles
    • Shared ownership, transfers of equity, re-mortgages, and refinancing
  • Strong leadership qualities and ability to mentor junior staff.
  • Knowledge of compliance frameworks including CQS and SRA standards.
  • Financial and operational awareness to manage departmental performance and targets.
  • Exceptional organisation, multitasking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Comfortable with case management systems and data reporting (MI).
  • Ability to foster a team-oriented, performance-driven culture.
