About the Position: We are seeking a skilled and innovative (Lead) Entry and Descent Vehicle (EDV) Engineer to join our dynamic team dedicated to the Tumbleweed Rover mission. As a fully-fledged Mars Mission is soon approaching, Team Tumbleweed has reached a critical point in which our cutting-edge technology is being developed and tested at a high magnitude of complexity and intensity. This includes developing one of the lead components of a successful Tumbleweed Mission which, after a highly complex Entry, Descent, and Landing (EDL) phase, can safely bring the rover to the Martian surface.
As the (Lead) EDV Engineer, you will be instrumental in designing, developing, and overseeing the implementation of the entry and descent systems critical for the safe and successful deployment of the Deployment Demonstrator Rover.

Expertise in aerodynamics, heat shield design, and guidance systems or atmospheric entry

Experience in designing Entry and Descent Vehicles for planetary exploration missions

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with proficiency in simulation tools

Enrolled in a Bachelor’s or higher degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field

Expected commitment of at least 1.5 years and approximately 15 hours per week

(Lead) Leadership experience and the ability to lead a small team of engineers effectively

Responsibilities:

(Lead) Oversee the design of the EDV.

(Lead) Regularly update the project leads on the development progress.

Conceptualize, design, and develop the EDV for our TEDD mission.

Design and develop the mechanism that will eject the rover mid-air following successful atmospheric reentry.

Conduct detailed aerodynamic modeling and simulation to predict EDV performance during entry and descent phases.

Design and integrate heat shield systems to protect the Tumbleweed Rover during atmospheric entry.

Develop and implement GNC systems to precisely guide the EDV during descent and facilitate a controlled landing

Establish comprehensive testing protocols for EDV systems to validate performance under various atmospheric conditions

Create detailed documentation for EDV designs, testing procedures, and performance evaluations
