Job Summary:
The Controls Engineer will be responsible for confirming design and functionality of upper-level controls of automated sortation systems. Must be able to isolate and correct controls I/O issues using PLC and HMI feedback along with basic electrical troubleshooting techniques. This position requires working under the guidance of Senior/Lead Controls Engineers, who are responsible for the overall delivery of Controls systems that are part of customer projects. To support the project scope and schedule, this position will work with other members of the FORTNA Controls group to ensure drawings and software are completed, installed, commissioned, validated, and
documented as required.
Responsibilities:
- Write and implement PLC code, integrate subsystems, and assist in all on-site controls engineering tasks.
- Utilize Human Machine Interface (HMI) using commercially available products such as Ignition, Wonderware or FactoryTalk View.
- Implement PLC and HMI programs to satisfy current design and customer specifications under the supervision of Sr. Controls Engineers
- Work with FORTNA employees, customer representatives and third-party vendors to ensure all aspects of a project are considered during both the design and execution phases
- Review electrical designs and provide accurate as-built drawings for approval.
- Individually or as a team, commission complex automated systems, provide site engineering support, and complete system acceptance testing.
- Provide support of system commissioning efforts as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Must be self-motivated, self-aware, detail-oriented, and results-focused.
- Understanding of VFDs, induction motors, programmable logic controllers and industrial networks.
- Ability to troubleshoot and isolate basic controls I/O problems
- Ability to manage and execute basic system implementations, enhancements, and retrofits.
- Ability to collaborate and communicate with FORTNA team members, project managers and customers in a professional written and spoken manner.
- Ability to take direction from Sr. Level Controls Engineers to support the project and ensure all aspects of project goals are achieved.
- Ability to produce quality designs, drawings, programs, and documentation with minimal errors
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or comparable.
- 2-4 years of experience within an industrial controls environment which includes:
- PLC programming (Rockwell Software required, Siemens or Schneider software a plus)
- HMI Programming (FactoryTalk View or Ignition)
- Input and output device design, implementation, and troubleshooting.
- Industrial communication networks (EtherNet/IP, Devicenet, Profinet, etc.)
- Equivalent work experience will also be considered as a substitute for education.
Other Qualifications Desired:
- Valid drivers license and able to rent a car without a co-renter.
- Experience managing Engineering projects requiring collaboration between multiple Engineering work streams
- Experience leading and directing Engineering support resources to achieve project milestones
- UL, NEC, NFPA, OSHA design requirements
- 480VAC motor control panel design experience
- Strong comprehension of Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet IP, network design and requirements
- Strong leadership skills
- Experience with VFDs preferred (networked a plus).
- Experience with Microsoft 365 - Office Apps.

- Physical stamina may be required for prolonged standing, bending, stooping, and/or working in cramped quarters.
- Exposure to potentially dangerous tools and equipment amidst a variety of building materials is probable, as is occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts.
- The noise level in the work environment can vary from being relatively quiet, to moderate, to excessive.
Travel Requirements:
- This position requires up to 75% travel to various job site locations, trade shows, and offices.
