Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Optometric Assistant to join our team. In this role, you will play a crucial part in providing exceptional patient care and supporting the daily operations of our optometry practice. The ideal candidate will have experience in a medical/optometric office setting, with a strong emphasis on patient interaction, imaging and performing dry eye procedures.

Duties

  • Assist optometrists during patient examinations by preparing the examination room and ensuring all necessary equipment is ready for use.
  • Perform tests and imaging in a uniquely diverse and extensive testing environment
  • Manage front desk responsibilities, including scheduling appointments, checking patients in and out, and handling patient inquiries.
  • Maintain accurate electronic medical records (EMR) and ensure all documentation is completed timely and accurately.
  • Provide excellent patient care by addressing concerns and answering questions regarding eye health and optical products.
  • Assist with retail sales of eyewear, including frames and lenses, while providing knowledgeable recommendations to patients.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure a smooth workflow within the practice.
  • Stay updated on medical terminology related to optometry and optical products to enhance patient interactions.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a medical office or optometry setting is preferred.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records systems; experience with EVisionCare is a plus.
  • Strong customer service skills with an ability to engage effectively with patients of all ages, including pediatrics.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology related to optometry and optical products is advantageous.
  • Sales experience in retail or optical environments is beneficial.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail in both clinical tasks and administrative duties.

Key Responsibilities:

You will be practiced and familiar in performing and recording results from diagnostic tests using:

  • Anterior Segment Camera Captures detailed images of the eye's front structures, including the cornea, iris, and lens, assisting in the diagnosis and management of anterior segment conditions.
  • Visual Acuity Testing Measures the sharpness and clarity of vision, typically using a Snellen chart, to detect refractive errors and monitor changes in vision.
  • Fundus Photography Produces photographs of the retina, optic nerve head, and blood vessels, essential for diagnosing and monitoring retinal diseases and systemic conditions affecting the eye.
  • Dry Eye Imaging and Treatments Utilizes imaging techniques to assess tear film quality and ocular surface health, guiding the diagnosis and management of dry eye disease.

You will also have the opportunity to handle advanced diagnostic testing in the following areas, expanding your knowledge base and career generally as an optometric professional:

  • Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer Assesses the visual field and peripheral vision, detecting blind spots or visual field defects indicative of conditions like glaucoma, neurological issues, or other eye diseases.
  • OCT Laser Scanner (Optical Coherence Tomography) Provides high-resolution cross-sectional images of retinal and optic nerve structures, aiding in the diagnosis and monitoring of conditions such as macular degeneration and glaucoma.
  • Corneal Topography Maps the curvature and shape of the cornea, crucial for diagnosing corneal conditions and fitting contact lenses, especially rigid gas-permeable lenses.
  • Biometry Measures ocular dimensions such as axial length and anterior chamber depth, essential for calculating the appropriate power of intraocular lenses during cataract surgery.
  • Virtual Reality Testing Simulates real-world visual environments to assess visual function and performance, aiding in comprehensive vision evaluation.

You will have experience and a passion for the following:

  • Ensure all equipment is maintained, calibrated, and functioning optimally.
  • Prepare patients for testing, explain procedures clearly, and ensure comfort and cooperation throughout.
  • Accurately record, store, and organize diagnostic data for review by the optometrists.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with PHIPA and clinic protocols.
  • Assist with clinical flow and administrative tasks as needed, including pre-testing, appointment coordination, and supporting other team members.
  • Monitor inventory and report supply needs related to testing and imaging equipment.
  • Participate in ongoing training to stay current with new technologies and testing protocols.

Qualifications:

  • Experience as an Optometric Assistant, Optical Technician, Ophthalmological Assistant or Technician in a clinic or in a similar clinical support role
  • Strong understanding of optical and ocular anatomy terminology.
  • Excellent communication and patient interaction skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in data handling.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a busy clinical setting.
  • Proficiency with clinic software and digital imaging systems.
  • Completion of an Optometric Assistant certification or equivalent experience is considered an asset.
