About the job Tag Welder

Job Summary:

  • The Tag Welder performs tack welding and fit-up activities to support the fabrication and installation of piping systems. The role ensures that piping components are accurately aligned, securely tack welded, and prepared for final welding in accordance with approved drawings, fit-up tolerances, and Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), with particular emphasis on stainless steel lines and pneumatic haulage piping.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform tack welding on stainless steel and carbon steel piping joints in accordance with the applicable WPS to maintain alignment during final welding.
  • Fit, align, and secure piping spools, fittings, flanges, valves, and supports to approved drawings, isometrics, and project specifications.
  • Prepare pneumatic haulage piping assemblies, ensuring correct alignment and fit-up before final welding.
  • Verify joint preparation, root gaps, bevel angles, hi-lo alignment, and dimensional tolerances prior to tack welding.
  • Ensure tack welds are clean, adequately sized, and positioned so they do not interfere with final welding or inspection requirements.
  • Assist welders during fabrication by maintaining proper joint alignment throughout the welding process.
  • Remove, grind, or repair tack welds when required by the WPS or as directed by the QC Inspector or Welding Supervisor.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Valid welder qualification to ASME Section IX (or equivalent) for the applicable welding process used for tack welding.
  • Minimum 1–2 years of experience in piping fit-up and tack welding on industrial construction projects.
  • Experience with stainless steel piping and process or utility piping systems; experience with pneumatic haulage piping is an advantage.
  • Good understanding of piping fit-up tolerances, joint preparation requirements, and welding sequence.
  • Familiarity with basic inspection requirements and the importance of maintaining alignment for code-quality welds.
