Lead Hand Pipe Fitter(GSU)

Job Summary:

• The Lead Pipefitter runs a pipefitting crew at the workface. The role combines hands-on fit-up work with crew leadership: reading and interpreting fabrication drawings, planning the joint sequence, distributing tasks within the crew, and delivering dimensionally correct, weld-ready fit-ups that pass QC inspection at the first attempt.

Key Responsibilities:

• Independently read and interpret isometric drawings, spool drawings, GA drawings, and P&IDs, and translate them into a practical work sequence for the crew.
• Lead a crew of pipefitters and helpers; assign daily tasks, monitor workmanship, and keep the crew productive throughout the shift.
• Perform and supervise fit-up of pipes, fittings, flanges, and spools, controlling alignment, root gap, high-low, and flange squareness before release to welding.
• Verify material identity against drawings before fabrication (grade, schedule, rating, heat number where required) and stop work on any mismatch.
• Carry out dimensional checks on completed spools and installed lines; present fit-ups to QC and close out any comments immediately.
• Coordinate the handover of joints between fitting and welding crews to keep the workflow continuous.
• Deliver toolbox talks, control safe use of grinders and lifting aids within the crew, and enforce housekeeping at the workface.
• Report progress, manpower use, material shortages, and drawing discrepancies to the Piping Supervisor daily.

Qualifications and Requirements:

• Minimum 5 years of pipefitting experience in oil & gas or industrial fabrication, including at least 1 year leading a crew.
• Able to read isometric and fabrication drawings without assistance and plan work from them independently.
• Solid knowledge of piping materials — carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy grades — together with fitting types, schedules, and flange ratings.
• Skilled with fit-up tooling: clamps, pipe stands, levels, squares, and measuring instruments.
• Practical understanding of fit-up requirements under ASME B31.3 and typical project tolerances.
• Clear communicator, able to coordinate with welders and QC.
• Valid site safety training; physically fit for heavy manual work.
