Junior Research Analyst, Remote

Our client, based out of Washington, DC, is seeking a Junior Research Analyst for a remote, contract or full-time opportunity. 


This will be a contingent hire for a contract with SAMHSA expected to start in April 2022. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) requires program and analytical support services, short term analyses, technical assistance, and support for its information and related programs.


  • Apply best practices in assessing policy issues and current trends related to mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Conduct research to support the development of clear statements of the issue and/or a new hypothesis and concepts in planning, conducting, and evaluating long-term projects and proposals for the solution of complex public policy questions.
  • Communicate and present data-driven insights and recommendations appropriate for diverse populations.
  • Conduct environmental scans (systematic review of literature) on various public health topics.
  • Create, manipulate, and analyze data sets of varying size and complexity, and use appropriate methods/procedures to conduct and report analyses.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of public health frameworks that may impact or support mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Understand and explore social determinants of health and other factors impacting mental health disorders and interventions.
  • Support the development of innovative methodologies and implement strategies to track emerging public health trends and priorities via social media analytics.
  • Support data quality reviews, data analysis, report creation, survey programming and instrument development.
  • Conduct research in support of focus groups, conferences, and meetings.
  • Produce consistent, insightful, high-quality work.
  • Report to the Senior Research Analyst and/or Program Manager.


  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in social sciences, health sciences, public health, biology/chemistry, operations research or other related public health fields.
  • Minimum of 2 years overall related experience. 
  • Public health experience at state, tribal, local, territorial, or federal level is preferred. 
  • General understanding and use of relational databases and programming for reporting purposes. 
  • Experience with data science tools or models preferred. 
  • Strong attention to detail. 
  • Ability to conduct research, analyze information, and identify common trends.
  • Demonstration of an inquisitive research approach. 
  • Must demonstrate honesty, integrity, and appreciation of differing opinions and perspectives, and must be responsible, accountable, and collaborative.
