Welding Engineer | East Lansing, MI

Salary Range: $76,000 - $116,000 depending on experience

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and optimize welding processes to ensure quality, efficiency, and safety standards are met.
  • Develop and implement welding procedures, specifications, and quality control plans.
  • Select appropriate welding equipment, materials, and consumables for manufacturing applications.
  • Troubleshoot welding defects and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Train and mentor welding personnel on best practices, safety protocols, and new technologies.
  • Conduct root cause analysis for welding-related failures and implement preventative measures.
  • Collaborate with design, production, and quality assurance teams to ensure weld integrity in manufactured products.
  • Stay abreast of industry advancements and emerging welding technologies, recommending implementation where beneficial.

Recommended Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in welding process selection, development, and optimization for manufacturing environments.
  • Strong understanding of welding metallurgy, weldability of various materials, and non-destructive testing (NDT) methods.
  • Proficiency in welding codes and standards (e.g., AWS, ASME, ISO) and their application in manufacturing.
  • Experience with welding automation and robotics, including programming and troubleshooting.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze and resolve complex welding-related issues.

Bonus Qualifications

  • - Experience with advanced welding processes such as laser welding, electron beam welding, or friction stir welding.
  • - Familiarity with welding automation and robotics in a manufacturing setting.
  • - Knowledge of non-destructive testing (NDT) methods and interpretation of results.
  • - Certification in welding inspection (e.g., CWI, CWE).
  • - Experience with Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma principles applied to welding processes.
