Overview and Purpose of Role

Due to continued growth and future expansion plans, we are recruiting for a newly created position Head of HSE.

This role is pivotal in delivering and maintaining a robust Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) performance framework across the company. As Head of HSE, you will lead all aspects of HSE performance, ensuring continuous improvement, legislative compliance, and the adoption of best practices.

You will play a key role in shaping the HSE strategy and positioning the company as a leader in health, safety, and environmental standards within the industry. The ideal candidate will actively embody and promote values of People, Innovation, Partnership, and Efficiency in everyday decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership for global HSE operations, ensuring full compliance across all sites.
  • Champion a positive HSE culture and lead change programmes that embed this culture company-wide.
  • Influence and support senior leaders, managers, and supervisors in fulfilling their HSE responsibilities.
  • Lead initiatives and campaigns to improve HSE standards and employee engagement.
  • Establish KPIs and use metrics to measure and drive performance improvements.
  • Develop, maintain, and update HSE strategies, policies, and procedures in line with ISO14001 and ISO45001 standards and regional legislation.
  • Oversee certification processes for ISO14001 and ISO45001, including audits and surveillance.
  • Lead incident investigations, ensuring root causes are identified, corrective actions are implemented, and recurrence is prevented.
  • Manage internal inspections and audits, monitoring trends and ensuring compliance.
  • Deliver or coordinate HSE training internally and externally to build awareness and competence.
  • Lead and develop the HSE team to ensure consistent performance and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain a calendar of key safety activities, inspections, and compliance checks.
  • Develop and manage the HSE teams annual budget.
  • Support prequalification and tender submissions, subcontractor assessments, and onboarding.
  • Engage with regulatory and professional bodies including HSE, OSHA, local councils, and emergency services.
  • Represent the company at client forums and contribute to mental health and wellbeing programmes.
  • Undertake any additional duties as required by management to support business needs.

Candidate Requirements

  • NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent Level 6 qualification) in Occupational Safety and Health.
  • ISO 14001 / 45001 Internal Auditor qualification (desirable).
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in a HSE role, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership capacity, preferably within a manufacturing environment.
  • Proven experience in developing and leading a positive HSE culture.
  • In-depth understanding of relevant ISO, OSHA, and legal HSE standards and policies.
  • Ability to translate strategic goals into operational objectives and action plans.
  • Natural leader with a proactive and collaborative approach; able to inspire and drive performance.
  • Willingness to travel internationally when required.
  • Strong communication, analytical, organisational, and problem-solving skills.
  • High attention to detail with a hands-on, pragmatic approach.
