Overview
ONEX Construction is in search of an expert Pipe Shop Fabrication Lead.
A person that has dedicated themselves to mastering the very detailed craft of pipe welding and fabrication. This role demands technical knowledge, capacity to lead, mentor, and guide a diverse team through complex projects that span several high-level industries, including food, beverage, pharmaceutical, automotive, and marine sectors. With a strong focus on GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding, or TIG welding), particularly for stainless steel tubing as well as Schedule 10, Sch 40, Sch 80, etc. At this position you will help our operation by being a leader of Safety, Quality, Performance, Excellence and Innovation in pipe fabrication.
Key Responsibilities:
As the Pipe Fabrication Shop Lead, you will be entrusted with a broad spectrum of responsibilities that require both hands-on expertise and leadership. Your daily duties will include:
Project Oversight: Direct management of pipe shop fabrication projects, from inception to completion, ensuring adherence to project specifications, timelines, client schedules, and budgetary constraints.
Team Management: Leading, managing, delegating, and training pipe welders and pipefitters, fostering a culture that encourages continuous learning and excellence.
Technical Direction: Providing clear guidance on all facets of pipe fabrication, including preparation, assembly, welding, inspection, and quality control.
Quality Assurance: Upholding the highest standards of weld integrity and compliance with industry codes such as ASME B31.1 & ASME B31.3; -*D1.1 and D17.1 certifications are a plus.
Safety Compliance: Promoting a safe work environment, enforcing safety protocols, and ensuring all team members are properly trained and equipped to perform each task, operate each tool, and piece of equipment safely.
Technical Qualifications and Certifications:
The successful candidate will possess a robust technical background, while possessing relevant certifications and verifiable experience in advanced welding processes. Required qualifications include:
GTAW / TIG Welding Mastery: Demonstrated in GTAW-TIG welding on stainless steel tubing & Schedule Piping while having a fundamental skill for the fabrication of clean, reliable piping systems in sensitive industries.
Orbital Welding Experience: Proficiency in orbital welding techniques, essential for projects demanding uniform and repeatable weldsfrequently utilized in the food & beverage, pharmaceutical, and high-purity sectors where precision is paramount.
ASME B31.1 & B31.3 Certifications: Comprehensive knowledge and certification in these codes is required, a irming expertise in power piping (B31.1) and process piping (B31.3).
Weld Testing: Ability to pass a minimum 6G weld test. *The ability to pass 6GR is a plus.
D1.1, D17.1 Certifications (Strongly Preferred): Additional certifications under these codes signal versatility and a commitment to continual development.
- Materials Expertise: Hands-on experience welding a range of advanced materials is beneficial. This includes Aluminum, Titanium, Hastelloy, Molybdenum, Inconel, and Copper-Nickel.

Precision pipe fabrication requires not only technical skill, but an understanding of the unique requirements of each sector:
Food & Beverage: Strict sanitary standards necessitate flawless welds and contamination-free surfaces. TIG welding of stainless steel ensures smooth, clean piping for product integrity and safety.
Pharmaceutical: Ultra-high purity standards require orbital welding expertise for consistent, crevice-free joints that prevent the formation of bacteria, microbial growth, and facilitate e ective cleaning.
Automotive/Marine: Fabrication often involves intricate assemblies using both standard and exotic materials, requiring adaptability and precise control. *Certified Lokring installer for Process/Marine is considered a plus.
Leadership/Management:
Beyond technical ability, the Pipe Fabrication Shop Lead must be a seasoned leader:
Training and Mentorship: Develop the skills of the welding and pipefitting team, developing bench strength, o ering hands-on instruction and fostering a culture of safety and quality.
Delegation: Assign tasks strategically, matching individual strengths to project requirements for optimal results in the shop as well as personnel assigned to the field.
