Job Openings General Counsel (Designate)

About the job General Counsel (Designate)

Location: Remote (US East Coast or EU preferred)
Team: you + an experienced paralegal
Reports to: CEO (with board exposure)

About us
We are a lean PC/console publisher with global launches and a remote-first culture. Low overhead, high ownership, and the freedom to do focused work from your home office.

Why this role exists
We want a seasoned #2 from a major publisher/platform to become our first in-house legal leader. You'll run the function immediately and have a structured path to a formal GC title (and company secretary duties) after agreed milestones.

What you'll do

  • Own end-to-end commercial & publishing work: co-dev/OW, work-for-hire, milestone & rev-share, porting/localization, marketing/UA/creator deals, vendor frameworks.

  • Lead platform/distribution agreements (Steam/console stores), age ratings (ESRB/PEGI/USK), and live-ops/legal policies (UGC, online safety/age-appropriate design, T&S escalation).

  • Build scalable playbooks: templates, clause libraries, approval matrices, and a simple contract intake/SLA.

  • Manage outside counsel (IP, litigation, employment, tax, M&A).

  • Support board/CorpGov (insider list, options/RSUs, disclosures, policy updates).

  • Mentor and direct our paralegal; set cadence, priorities, and quality bars.

What success looks like (promotion milestones)
Within 6-12 months, you've:

  1. Implemented a contract program (templates + intake) with <10 business-day SLA.

  2. Closed publisher/studio/platform deals independently, with clean handoffs to production/finance.

  3. Built a lean panel of outside counsel with pre-agreed fee caps.

  4. Presented quarterly legal/risks dashboard to execs/board.

What you've done

  • 8-12+ years PQE, including in-house at a video-game publisher/platform (US or EU).

  • Deep commercial/publishing negotiation under Delaware law (US).

  • Builder mindset: you've rolled out templates/ process in a lean environment; you like remote work and clear documentation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ratings/loot box/age-design exposure; subscriptions/e-commerce; production fluency; cross-border (USUK/EU).

How we work
Remote-first, home-office friendly, core hours overlapping ET/UK, minimal meetings, strong docs, and real ownership.

How to apply
Send a short note + resume (or LinkedIn) and 12 anonymized deal summaries that show your publishing/studio work.
