A non-profit health organization dedicated to providing comprehensive healthcare services to the residents of Southeast Alaska.

Position Summary:

The Registered Nurse (RN) Labor and Delivery is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to patients in the obstetrics unit. This includes antepartum, labor and delivery, postpartum, newborn care, and C-section recovery. The RN will function independently while collaborating with the healthcare team and responding to emergencies, including trauma and fetal distress. On-call responsibilities include weekends, holidays, and after-hours.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver patient care based on nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation

  • Provide 1:1 care during labor and monitor fetal heart tracings using NICHD standards

  • Support breastfeeding and perform newborn assessments

  • Assist physicians with procedures and manage post-surgical recovery

  • Triage OB phone calls and evaluate unscheduled patients

  • Administer medications and manage medical equipment appropriately

  • Educate patients and families on procedures, recovery, and self-care

  • Maintain accurate documentation and confidentiality

  • Participate in departmental meetings, continuing education, and staff development

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • May lead and delegate to CNAs and support staff

Qualifications:

  • Current, unrestricted RN license in Alaska (or other U.S. state with AK license application in process)

  • Must obtain the following certifications within 6 months of hire if not already held:

    • BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP (American Heart Association or Red Cross)

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • At least 1 year of clinical nursing experience preferred, L&D experience strongly preferred

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong clinical judgment and ability to respond in emergency situations

  • Knowledge of maternal and neonatal health, medications, and procedures

  • Proficiency in electronic health records and documentation

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Compassionate, patient-centered care approach

Work Conditions:

  • Hospital-based setting in Sitka, Alaska

  • Rotating shifts with on-call, night, weekend, and holiday responsibilities

  • Physical ability to perform patient care and respond to emergencies
