Operations Specialist – Heavy Haul / Overdimensional Freight (Brokerage)
Location: Spring, TX (Greater Houston Market)
Department: Operations / Brokerage
Reports To: Operations Manager / Director of Operations
Position Summary
The Operations Specialist is responsible for the end-to-end execution of overdimensional (OD) and heavy-haul shipments within a freight brokerage environment. This role requires deep expertise in permitting, routing, carrier sourcing, and compliance for oversized freight across multiple states. The ideal candidate thrives in high-touch, high-complexity logistics operations and has an established network of specialized carriers.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Execution
- Coordinate cradle-to-grave movement of oversized / overweight (OD/OW) freight shipments
- Build and execute detailed load plans including route surveys, axle configurations, and transit timing
- Secure qualified heavy-haul carriers (RGN, multi-axle, dual-lane, etc.)
- Negotiate rates with carriers and ensure margin compliance
Permitting & Compliance
- Manage multi-state permitting processes, including:
- Oversize/overweight permits
- Escorts / pilot cars
- Route restrictions and curfews
- Coordinate with third-party permit agencies when needed
Customer & Carrier Management
- Serve as primary point of contact for customers on specialized shipments
- Provide proactive communication on milestones, delays, and risk mitigation
- Build and maintain a vetted network of heavy-haul carriers and vendors
Problem Solving & Risk Mitigation
- Anticipate route challenges (bridge laws, construction, weather)
- Resolve service disruptions quickly (breakdowns, re-permitting, re-routing)
- Maintain high service levels on high-value, high-visibility freight
Systems & Documentation
- Utilize TMS systems for load tracking, documentation, and billing
- Ensure accurate entry of accessorials (permits, escorts, tolls, etc.)
- Maintain detailed shipment records for audit and compliance
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of freight brokerage experience specifically in heavy haul / OD freight
- Strong understanding of:
- Permitting processes across multiple states
- Axle weight distribution and equipment types
- Escort requirements and route planning
- Experience with TMS platforms and load tracking systems
- Strong negotiation and problem-solving skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with project cargo, energy, construction, or industrial freight
- Familiarity with route survey tools and permitting software
- Existing book of specialized carriers or customers
