What you'll need:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification prior to date of hire.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications required prior to hire.
  • Recommended ITLS certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Must possess IV certification upon hire.
  • Must possess knowledge of and ability to apply emergency medical theory, practices, techniques and methods.
  • Must have the visual and auditory ability to assess patient conditions in order to administer effective care using standard ER procedures.
  • Must have the ability to verbally communicate and problem solve effectively with patient, staff, physicians and families
  • Must have manual dexterity to perform such functions as drawing up and administering injections, inserting catheters, starting and administering IV solutions and performing BLS, ACLS and PALS.
  • Must have the physical agility to respond in a quick manner and in accordance with established facility practice regarding unexpected safety issues.
  • May be required to assist with lifting and transferring of patients.

What you'll do:

  • Provides patient care to emergency department patients in accordance with established policies and procedures and within scope of practice.
  • Admits patients to the emergency department, assesses needs, identifies problems, plans and implements emergency care, establishes priorities of care and evaluates care provided.
  • Carries out physician orders, reviews patient medication records, prepares, administers, and records medications and IV solutions. Starts and discontinues IVs.
  • Observes patient condition and vital signs; evaluates findings and records observation in the record; notifies physician of any adverse or abnormal findings in a timely manner; administers routine, scheduled and emergency treatments according to physicians orders.
  • Prepares equipment and aids physician during treatment and examination of patients.
  • Reviews and completes records and forms to ensure continuity and quality of patient care.
  • Responds to all situations based upon hospital standards, policies, procedures and protocol.
  • Responsible with assisting the Assistant Director of Nursing or Unit Based Educator for teaching personnel in the area of new techniques and changes in policy.
  • Knowledgeable in the scope of care of EMS, Paramedics, Registered Nurses, etc.
