Position Overview: We are seeking a skilled and experienced Commercial Journeyman Mechanical Insulator to join our team. This vital role involves the precise application, removal, and repair of various types of insulation on pipes, ductwork, equipment, and other mechanical systems within large-scale commercial, industrial, and medical facilities. The successful candidate will play a critical part in controlling noise, maintaining temperature, and ensuring energy efficiency and safety of mechanical systems. Key Responsibilities:

  • Measure, cut, and fit various types of insulation materials (e.g., fiberglass, Armaflex, foam glass, phenolic, cork, Styrofoam) for covering surfaces on pipes, ductwork, boilers, tanks, vessels, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Apply, remove, and repair insulation, ensuring proper thickness, adhesion, and seamless finish.
  • Select the appropriate insulation materials and installation methods based on project specifications, location, surface shape, and equipment use.
  • Read and accurately interpret blueprints, schematics, technical drawings, and specifications to determine job requirements, material quantities, and installation layouts.
  • Fit insulation accurately around obstructions, bends, and complex shapes.
  • Apply protective coverings such as PVC, aluminum jacketing, canvas, sealants, tape, cement, or asphalt mastic to insulated surfaces or access holes to prevent damage and maintain integrity.
  • Install sheet metal or other protective jacketing around insulated pipes and equipment using screws or banding to protect insulation from weather conditions, physical damage, or fire spread.
  • Prepare surfaces for insulation application by cleaning, brushing, spreading adhesives, cement, or attaching metal pins as required.
  • Operate and safely use various hand and power tools common to mechanical insulation work, including tape measures, knives, saws, shears, crimpers, and banding tools.
  • Work safely and efficiently from ladders, scaffolds, and manlifts at various heights, adhering strictly to all fall protection protocols.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment, adhering to all company safety procedures and OSHA regulations (OSHA 10-hour preferred).
  • Assist in material take-offs and ensure proper inventory and use of materials.
  • Collaborate effectively with other trades and team members to ensure project deadlines are met.
  • Perform other related duties or special projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum of 4+ years of documented experience as a Commercial Journeyman Mechanical Insulator, specifically on large-scale commercial, industrial, or medical projects.
  • Proven expertise in installing various insulation materials, including but not limited to: fiberglass pipe covering, Armaflex, foam glass, phenolic, duct wrap, and rigid board.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in applying protective jacketing, such as PVC, aluminum, or canvas, including fabrication and securement.
  • Strong ability to accurately read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, and specifications to determine insulation requirements and installation methods.
  • Proficient in the safe use of all relevant hand and power tools for mechanical insulation, including cutting, fitting, and finishing.
  • Ability to work from ladders, scaffolds, and manlifts at various heights and in confined spaces, while strictly adhering to safety protocols.
  • Strong commitment to safety, including knowledge of OSHA regulations and the ability to complete basic safety paperwork (e.g., JHAs).
  • Must be able to fulfill the essential job functions in a consistent state of alertness and a safe manner, often performing physical tasks in varying environmental conditions.
