Compensation: $98,000 - $135,000 (depending on experience)

The American Indian College Fund (College Fund) began operations in 1989 and has been the nations largest charity supporting Native higher education. The College Fund believes Education is the answer and strive to positively impact the lives of Native Americans and Alaskan Natives by supporting their higher education and career objectives. The College Fund raises funds from the private sector, provides scholarships and holistic support to students, while also supporting the capacities of tribal colleges and universities (TCUs).

Headquartered in Denver, Colorado, the College Fund employs over 90 team members, with some out of state employees. Our operations include student success services, TCU capacity building, research, public awareness, and fundraising and we annually serve over 4,000 students and 34 TCUs across the United States.

Position Description:

The Director of Human Resources oversees the College Funds talent management, ensuring effective use of staff to achieve its mission. They design and evaluate initiatives that promote high performance and foster an organizational culture rooted in Indigenous values. They maintain employee engagement, satisfaction, and adherence to legal compliance, and develop HR practices that emphasize empowerment, accountability, and productivity. Reporting to the CFO/COO, the Director supervises three team members and upholds confidentiality and fairness, supporting the organization's vision, mission, and culture.

Essential Job Functions

  • Talent Acquisition:
    • Develop and ensure implementation of timely and appropriate processes, including orientation.
  • Talent Development and Retention:
    • Identify, develop, and ensure implementation of employee professional development opportunities to support organizational and individual goals, including evaluation processes to identify employee progress towards growth goals, acknowledging successes, and supporting opportunities for improvement.
    • Create meaningful compensation package structures, including salary structures and benefits, and conduct market surveys and analysis.
    • Provide opportunities for employee engagement.
    • Support employee recognition programs and assess consistency and appropriateness across departments, including various bonus opportunities.
    • Develop, implement, and analyze employee surveys.
  • Organizational Design and Culture:
    • Develop and recommend organizational structures to achieve organizational goals, including growth objectives. This includes creating meaningful employee classification structures and position titles, including rubrics defining skills and responsibility for various position levels.
    • Support appropriate promotion pathways.
    • Review and assess consistency and appropriateness of structures, titles, and salaries across organizational departments.
    • Support change management.
    • Actively participate with organizational equity, inclusion, and culture work led by the President/CEO
    • Actively participate in organizational strategic planning and budgeting
  • General Employee and Compliance Management:
    • Communicate and ensure adherence to applicable employment laws and regulations
    • Provide oversight and ensure accurate and timely delivery of the payroll function.
    • Maintain human resource records
    • Ensure appropriate personnel policies and procedures for the organization.
    • Maintain relationship with employment legal counsel
    • Support employee management related to short and long-term disability, Workers Compensation, Unemployment Insurance, health/dental/eye insurance, education benefits, and FMLA
  • Human Resources Department Management;
    • Hire, supervise, and mentor human resources department personnel.
    • Develop, implement, and monitor department annual goals and budget.
    • Lead innovation and use of technology to enhance services to College Fund team members and department efficiencies.

Competencies

  • Knowledge of current employment laws and regulations
  • Working knowledge of human resource practices, policies and procedures, employee relations, talent acquisition, compensation, and benefits
  • Strong computer skills including knowledge of Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Proven success in employee development
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Flexible critical thinker with strong creative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to be discreet and maintain strict confidentiality

Education / Experience

  • Bachelors degree
  • Five to seven years of Human Resources leadership experience (as a manager or director)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters Degree
  • SHRM or other HR certification
  • Not-for-Profit experience
  • Experience with organizations of 100 employees
  • Knowledge of American Indian culture and communities and/or experience in working with American Indians
  • Knowledge of the DiSC and/or other employee assessment systems
