Job Summary

The Associate Civil Engineer performs professional civil engineering work involving the planning, design, construction, and supervision of a wide range of public works and infrastructure projects. This role applies established engineering principles and regulatory standards to ensure projects are completed efficiently, safely, and in compliance with applicable requirements. The position may include project leadership responsibilities, technical review, field supervision, and coordination with internal teams and external stakeholders.

Essential Job Functions

  • Apply civil engineering principles, practices, methods, and materials to the design and construction of varied engineering projects

  • Interpret and apply laws, codes, and regulations related to public works design and construction

  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee engineering programs or projects; monitor progress and evaluate results for technical quality and compliance with standards

  • Keep management informed throughout all phases of assigned projects

  • Prepare clear, comprehensive written reports and deliver oral presentations as required

  • Conduct engineering research, including investigation of specific problems and development of new methods, procedures, and systems

  • Analyze and prepare contracts and technical specifications for major engineering projects

  • Serve as resident engineer during construction, assigning and evaluating work of staff and recommending changes to plans or procedures

  • Design public works projects or supervise preparation of plans and specifications for facilities such as buildings, dams, flood control channels, traffic signals, roads, highways, and sewer systems

  • Review plans prepared by outside engineers for code compliance and structural integrity

  • Determine sewer and sanitary design requirements for new developments and subdivisions

  • Assist in supervision of waterworks improvements, long-range planning initiatives, construction material inspections, sewer master planning, pollution control projects, and subdivision or parcel map reviews

  • Support supervision of engineering activities related to groundwater research, road maintenance, water and materials testing, lighting districts, pumping plants, dams, flood control facilities, water conservation, erosion control, and construction-related permit reviews

  • Assist in supervising survey-related engineering work, including boundary, centerline, and section line surveys, and coordinate with other divisions and external agencies

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree or higher in engineering from an accredited college or university

Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid California State Certificate of Registration as a Civil Engineer

  • Valid California Class C Driver License or ability to meet transportation requirements for job-related duties

Physical Requirements

  • Light physical effort, including occasional lifting up to 10 pounds, bending, stooping, squatting, and considerable walking
