Job Description

The Fiber Splicer is responsible for the installation of new cable lines, both underground and on utility poles, and performs maintenance on existing cables, including evaluation tests and repairs.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and splice fiber optic cables, locate problem areas, and perform repairs as needed using fusion splicer and fiber test equipment

  • Install and maintain transmission and reception equipment for FTTH (Fiber to the Home) networks

  • Install and maintain network systems for private lines and troubleshoot issues affecting service operation

  • Initiate test and turn-up procedures with System Engineers in accordance with compliance standards

  • Collect and interpret engineering documentation, including schematics, fiber management systems, and OTDR performance reports

  • Support field maintenance teams, including IT, regional engineering, and other related departments

  • Provide demand and preventive maintenance for fiber networks and FTTH

  • Maintain accurate network documentation on changes and upgrades

  • Troubleshoot MDF/headend issues with third-party providers

  • Collaborate with the engineering team to ensure all connections meet required specifications

  • Participate in an on-call rotation schedule as required

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or recognized equivalent required

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

  • Active and clean, non-restrictive state-issued drivers license in the state of employment

  • At least 3 years of hands-on/field experience in fiber splicing, test equipment, and restoration

  • Proficiency using fusion splicing machines

  • Understanding of broadband communication concepts, including fiber optics and Metro Ethernet networks

  • Ability to use advanced test equipment such as OTDRs, optical power meters, and other fiber testing tools

  • SCTE certification is a plus

  • Flexibility to work days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and participate in on-call rotations as needed
