Job Summary

Performs skilled, year-round highway maintenance work involving the operation, servicing, and troubleshooting of heavy equipment and machinery used for highway construction, maintenance, and emergency traffic services. Supervises and reviews the work of entry-level staff and small crews assigned to maintenance tasks and projects.

Approved formal education may be substituted for required work experience, and approved work experience may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • Equivalent combination of 1 year of education and experience after high school.

License/Certification

  • Valid Commercial Drivers License, Class A (CDL-A) with the appropriate tank endorsement.

Other Requirements

  1. Motor Vehicle Record must meet established minimum standards.

  2. Employment is conditional upon obtaining a CDL medical card (if not already employed in a qualifying state position).

  3. Must receive a negative result on a pre-employment urinalysis drug screen.

  4. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. intermittently.

  5. Must have reliable communication access and be available 24/7.

Trainee Option

Candidates holding a CDL-B who can obtain a CDL-A with endorsements within 1 year may be hired in trainee status.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating motorized highway maintenance equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Operates, services, and troubleshoots complex highway maintenance and construction equipment used in year-round operations, including snow and ice removal, flood mitigation, and seasonal surface treatment.

  • Performs field adjustments and emergency repairs on equipment to maintain serviceability and reports mechanical issues to supervisors.

  • Monitors road and weather conditions during winter storms and determines appropriate plowing or treatment actions based on safety and environmental guidelines.

  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates entry-level staff and small crews to ensure proper maintenance methods and safety practices are followed.

  • Performs maintenance in adverse conditions, including high-speed traffic areas, hazardous materials exposure, extreme weather, and during emergency or disaster situations.

  • Traverses varied terrain and performs heavy physical labor related to drainage, construction, and equipment or building repairs; regularly lifts and carries materials up to 50 lbs.

  • Responds immediately to winter maintenance needs and other traffic emergencies on a year-round, 24-hour basis.
