Job Summary
This leadership role is ideal for an innovative and experienced library professional ready to help shape and modernize public library collections and technical services. The position provides an opportunity to manage staff, oversee system-wide materials operations, and contribute to strategic planning and budget decisions that support a multi-branch library system.
The Assistant Division Chief plays a key leadership role within the materials and technical services function, supporting daily operations, staff supervision, and long-term service improvements. Working closely with senior leadership, this role focuses on ensuring efficient workflows, high-quality cataloging and processing, and effective access to library resources for patrons.
Key Responsibilities

Provide leadership, oversight, and strategic direction to multiple materials and technical services units

Directly supervise and support cataloging staff to ensure accuracy, consistency, and adherence to established standards

Manage supervisors responsible for physical processing and courier operations to ensure timely materials handling and delivery

Collaborate with division leadership on policies, procedures, priorities, and materials budget planning

Oversee subscription databases to ensure effective maintenance, accessibility, and alignment with collection goals

Support continuous improvement of workflows, systems, and internal customer service across departments
Minimum Education, Training, and Experience

Masters degree in library or information science

Two (2) years of public library experience

One (1) year of supervisory experience
Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated leadership, management, and technical services experience in a library or similar setting

Experience supervising, mentoring, and developing staff

Experience managing technical services or materials operations

Knowledge of cataloging principles, standards, and bibliographic record management

Experience coordinating physical processing, courier services, or support service functions

Experience with collection development, acquisitions, and collection evaluation

Budget management experience, including materials funds and spending priorities

Proficiency with integrated library systems (ILS) and library technologies

Experience developing or implementing policies, procedures, and best practices

Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly
