About the job Environment Artist
We're seeking a skilled, imaginative Environment Artist to create immersive, visually compelling spaces for [animation, virtual production, or other media]. You'll help shape the look, mood, and storytelling of each environment—from early visual exploration through final, production-ready assets.
Working closely with art, design, and technical teams, you'll transform concepts and references into cohesive environments that support the project's creative direction and practical requirements. The ideal candidate combines strong artistic judgment with technical proficiency, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively in a production pipeline.
Key Responsibilities
Create environment assets, locations, terrain, architecture, props, and set dressing that support the project's visual style and storytelling goals.
Interpret concept art, written briefs, reference materials, and feedback to develop production-ready environments.
Build environments using appropriate 3D modeling, sculpting, texturing, and material-authoring workflows.
Establish composition, scale, atmosphere, color, lighting, and visual hierarchy to guide the audience's attention and enhance the experience.
Collaborate with concept artists, level designers, technical artists, animators, lighting artists, and other production team members.
Optimize assets and scenes to meet performance, memory, rendering, and platform requirements.
Follow established art direction, technical specifications, naming conventions, and asset-management practices.
Create and maintain organized project files, reusable assets, materials, and documentation.
Review work in context, identify visual or technical issues, and refine assets based on feedback.
Communicate progress, flag production risks, and meet agreed project milestones.
Stay informed about relevant tools, techniques, and industry practices, applying them where they support project goals.
Required Qualifications
Demonstrated experience as an Environment Artist, 3D Artist, or in a closely related role.
A portfolio showcasing completed environments and relevant skills, such as modeling, texturing, composition, lighting, or world-building.
Strong understanding of form, perspective, scale, composition, color, and visual storytelling.
Proficiency with relevant 3D software, such as Maya, Blender, 3ds Max, or ZBrush.
Experience with texturing and material tools, such as Substance 3D Painter or Substance 3D Designer.
Familiarity with a real-time or rendering engine, such as Unreal Engine or Unity, depending on the project.
Understanding of UV mapping, materials, level of detail, asset optimization, and production-ready file preparation.
Ability to interpret art direction and incorporate feedback constructively.
Strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills.
Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative team.
Preferred Qualifications
Degree, diploma, or equivalent training in game art, 3D art, visual effects, animation, or a related discipline.
Experience in a professional game, film, animation, architectural visualization, or virtual-production pipeline.
Knowledge of procedural workflows and tools such as Houdini, procedural materials, or modular environment construction.
Familiarity with terrain, foliage, vegetation, or large-scale world-building workflows.
Experience with lighting, scene assembly, set dressing, or optimization for target platforms.
Understanding of scripting or technical workflows that support efficient asset creation.
Experience working with version-control and project-management tools.
Knowledge of accessibility, performance, or platform-specific considerations relevant to the project.
