About the Program

This program uses ballet and movement arts to support the healing and rehabilitation of incarcerated and at-risk youth, including those affected by trafficking, gang involvement, and sexual exploitation. We provide trauma-informed, therapeutic dance instruction in juvenile detention facilities to foster resilience, emotional regulation, and personal growth.


Position Summary

We are seeking emotionally intelligent and trauma-informed instructors to deliver structured ballet classes in secure juvenile correctional settings. The ideal candidate is compassionate, adaptable, and committed to using movement as a healing tool for youth navigating complex trauma.


Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate trauma-informed ballet classes for incarcerated youth

  • Maintain fidelity to a structured curriculum while adapting to unpredictable facility conditions

  • Establish rapport with diverse student populations through culturally responsive practices

  • Prioritize emotional and physical safety during each class

  • Follow safety protocols and comply with all mandated reporting requirements

  • Complete and maintain detailed session and progress documentation

  • Participate in certification and ongoing professional development training


Required Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years working with children or adolescents in a teaching, counseling, or coaching capacity

  • Movement Background: Intermediate to advanced experience in ballet or dance/movement arts

  • Key Competencies:

    • Strong emotional literacy and self-awareness

    • Patience and a child-centered approach

    • Cultural humility and sensitivity

    • Trauma-informed teaching practices

    • Nonverbal communication and situational awareness

  • Certifications:

    • CPR/First Aid (or willingness to obtain before starting)

    • Completion of a required multi-phase certification program before instruction

  • Work Environment Readiness:

    • Comfortable working in secure, tech-restricted environments

    • Willing and able to complete required facility clearance and background checks

    • Committed to professional boundaries, confidentiality, and accurate documentation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in correctional, high-risk, or trauma-affected youth environments

  • Training in trauma-informed education, expressive arts therapy, or youth development

  • Experience customizing movement instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners
