Senior Project Engineer - Civil Construction Engineering - Tier 1

Position Overview
The Senior Project Engineer (SPE) reports to the Construction Manager and is responsible for the planning, execution and closing of a project. The SPE ensures that contractual profitability and obligations are met and maintained. Furthermore, you will work with all relevant teams to manage internal and external resources and deliver the objectives of the project, on time and on budget.
During the construction of the works, the SPE is also responsible for providing technical, administrative and (Health &) Safety, Environmental, Quality & Sustainability (HSEQS) support to the Supervisors, either providing it yourself or delegating the responsibility to a direct-reporting Project/Site Engineer. These relationships require constant interaction and liaising.
Whilst there are a number of people responsible for the actual construction of the works, a key requirement for you is to be able to accurately report on how your projects are running (i.e. cost, time, scope and quality) at all times, requiring you to know and understand your daily costs.
The SPE has a mentoring role with the groups younger Engineers, requiring you to develop such relationships and provide guidance, motivation, emotional support, and role modelling as required.
Responsibilities
- Undertake the full range of a Senior Project Engineers responsibilities (consistent with your qualifications, skills and capabilities), from: preparing safety and construction documentation; to procurement; to preparing, tracking and forecasting against a construction budget; to liaising with the client; to investigating services/utilities and issuing internal permits to work; to maintaining a rolling program with the supervisor; to QA; to Contract Administration; to daily cost control; to weekly and monthly reporting, utilising engineering support services as required.

- Lead and motivate the project-based Engineers in order to meet or exceed all project targets and objectives
- Monitor and report on project construction delivery costs and develop strategies and recommendations for recovery actions in the event of overruns
- Lead and prepare the development of appropriate construction methods and staging plans and programs that clearly spell out how the works will be constructed, complete with a related construction master program
- In conjunction with the Construction Manager, drive the delivery of the project such that it meets or exceeds the project milestone dates
- Maintain a rolling 4-week program & resource plan with the Supervisors
- Ensure that the master project program is maintained up to date on a rolling monthly basis and accurately reflects the as-built dates for the activities, delay events and any resequencing of activities.
- Ensure Safety, Environmental and Quality (and other) management systems and project plans are adequate, up to date, implemented and adhered to
- Prepare, manage and track budgets and financial reports
- Quote and estimate from 1st principles to ensure accurate costing and forecasting of the project
- Read and interpret relevant contracts, subcontracts and technical specifications.
Desired Experience
Required Skills and Competencies
- 8+ years of experience as a project-based engineer in the construction engineering industry, in disciplines such as rail, tunnelling, civil, structural, and associated infrastructure
- Ideally experience working on infrastructure projects.
- The ability to follow through on delegated instructions and tasks
- The ability to report through Company systems
- Constant alertness to project risks and opportunities, including proactive intervention and/or escalation where required
- The ability to make good decisions based upon a mixture of analysis, experience and judgment
- Fluent in the Microsoft Office suite of desktop applications and related software packages, with proficiency in Excel and Project a must (proficiency in Primavera P6 an advantage)
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
Qualifications
- Civil Engineering degree (or similar)
- Construction Induction Training (CIT/White Card, formerly a Red Card)
- Provide First Aid (Level 2), ensuring this certificate is current at all times
- Certificate III in Occupational Health and Safety (or similar Safety Leadership-type program)
- Current Driver Licence and your own reliable vehicle.
