JOB OVERVIEW:

Database Administrators (DBAs) are the data guardians. They oversee the entire database lifecycle, from setting up and maintaining them to ensuring optimal performance and security. DBAs also plan for future growth, anticipating needs, and scaling the databases accordingly. They are the go-to experts for keeping data safe, reliable, and accessible.

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

This role is heavily focused on Online Transaction Processing (OLTP). The successful candidate will be the primary resource for ensuring optimal performance of our transactional databases. While some design and development tasks are included, the successful candidate's main responsibility will be managing deployments to production smoothly and keeping everyone informed throughout the process.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Database Administration

  • Coordinate the effective management of all Southern View Finance database environments (Production, Dev, UAT, Pre-prod, staging etc.)
  • Facilitate best possible system performance from the perspective of the applications and reports using the databases.
  • Ensure the Security of data is always maintained.
  • Services any data movement requests securely, accurately, and timeously
  • Provide support and advice to the development team for new and existing SQL code.
  • Conduct daily routine tasks including Health Checks.
  • Provide effective database security management support.
  • Ensure that backups are done and restored daily.
  • Set up new database environments, and configure in adherence with applications.
  • Database partitioning and archiving implementation.
  • Set up and maintain SQL mirroring, replication, and log shipping.

Capacity Planning & Availability Measures

  • Produce monthly reports.
  • Make recommendations to align hardware with reporting stats.

SQL Monitoring and Performance Optimisation

  • Monitor SQL Server and ensures monitoring tools are in alignment with business KPAs.
  • Identify poorly performing SQL code (stored procedures, functions, etc.)
  • Suggest code improvements on an ad-hoc basis, problematic code will be investigated and improved.

Deployment Planning, Execution, and Roll-Back Plan

  • Accurate and timely implementation and communication of deployment schedule.
  • Implements deploys and roll-backs, impact and interdependencies considered.
  • Maintain change control methodology, and amend operating procedures as deployment life cycle changes.
  • Enforce and verify SQL code policy is implemented on production.

Business Continuity Planning

  • Assist with Disaster Recovery planning and deployments.
  • Assist with maintenance of Disaster Recovery environment (database restores, mirroring, application configuration, testing).

Operational Incidents

  • Take care of existing operational incidents timeously and correctly.
  • Provide efficient 3rd-line support and assist with database-related queries.
  • Document and accurately update SOP and escalating processes.
  • Adhere to company policies and operating procedures.
  • Adhere to Response SLAs.
  • Ensure that incident management is adhered to in accordance with ITIL.

Mentoring

  • Positive engagement in team activities and actively contribute ideas to improve team dynamics performance.
  • Stakeholder management (internal and external).
  • Assist in the development of others, e.g. mentoring and knowledge share.
  • Quality control of others' work.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Grade 12 (Matric Certificate).
  • Relevant IT Diploma or Degree.
  • MCDBA/MCSA or Equivalent.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • At least 8 years advanced MS SQL development and administration experience in an IT operational environment.
