Role purpose

We're looking for Cloud Infrastructure Platform Engineers to provide the core technical engineering capability within a major cloud infrastructure and platform managed service for an oil & gas customer.

For this particular role, strong hands-on Windows, Linux, Azure and AWS experience is essential. We need someone who has genuinely operated this infrastructure in production — investigating incidents, making changes, maintaining services, troubleshooting networking and compute, responding to monitoring, supporting backup and recovery, and dealing with the day-to-day realities of keeping environments with this technology running.

This isn't a role where knowledge from certification or occasional project exposure will be enough. We are looking for someone who can demonstrate practical experience supporting and maintaining infrastructure with the envioronments above and who can take ownership of issues at T2/T3 level.

You will also need strong Microsoft Azure and hybrid infrastructure experience. This is a hands-on production engineering role sitting between our Cloud Infrastructire Platform Service Engineers and the Platform Technical Lead. You will own incidents and changes that require deeper investigation, broader technical knowledge or greater engineering judgement than routine operational support.

The environment is genuinely hybrid and multi-cloud, spanning Microsoft Azure, AWS, Linux, Windows, Azure VMware Solution, Azure Arc-enabled on-premises and offshore infrastructure, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Microsoft 365. The managed service also includes platform monitoring, patching, backup and recovery, automation, security remediation and operational support.

You will provide the primary T2/T3 engineering capability for the service, taking ownership of complex incidents, infrastructure changes, problem investigation and automation. In particular, you will strengthen the team's operational capability across the entire infrastructure estate.

This is different from a role where you spend six months building a platform and then hand it over to somebody else. You'll be responsible for keeping production services healthy and resolving the difficult problems that arise once technology meets the real world.

A typical week could involve diagnosing an AWS networking or EC2 issue, investigating a complex Azure connectivity problem, reviewing a failed Linux patch deployment, automating a recurring operational task, supporting a major incident, implementing a production infrastructure change or investigating a recurring backup problem.

The service operates within the customer's own ServiceNow environment and existing ITIL-aligned incident, request, change, problem and knowledge-management processes. Accurate ticket updates, sensible risk assessment, good documentation and disciplined change execution therefore matter alongside pure engineering ability.

You will work closely with the Platform Technical Lead and the wider Hypercube technical practice, giving you access to specialist expertise when an issue requires deeper knowledge of a particular technology.

You will also help develop the engineers around you. There is no direct line-management requirement, but we expect Cloud and Infrastructure Platform Engineers to share knowledge, mentor Service Engineers and help increase the technical capability of the whole team.

Key responsibilities

Incident and problem resolution

  • Lead investigation and resolution of T2/T3 incidents across the customer's cloud and infrastructure estate
  • Take escalations from Cloud and Infrastructure Platform Service Engineers and support them in developing stronger troubleshooting capability
  • Support P1/P2 major incidents and coordinate technical investigation where required
  • Perform structured root-cause analysis and drive permanent remediation for recurring or high-impact issues
  • Maintain problem records and engage vendors or specialist engineers where deeper expertise is needed
  • Escalate the most complex or high-risk issues to the Platform Technical Lead

Platform engineering

  • Operate, maintain and troubleshoot production infrastructure across AWS, Microsoft Azure and the wider hybrid environment
  • Take particular ownership of Azure and AWS operational support, including compute, networking, identity, monitoring, backup and platform troubleshooting
  • Support Windows and Linux server platforms, virtualisation, identity, networking, storage and cloud platform services
  • Maintain platform health, security and resilience across a genuinely multi-cloud estate
  • Work with specialist engineers where issues extend into technologies such as OCI, AVS, Microsoft 365 or other platform services

Change and release

  • Design and implement standard and complex production infrastructure changes
  • Produce clear implementation, test and rollback plans and work within the customer's change-control processes
  • Assess technical risk and obtain additional technical assurance for higher-risk changes
  • Validate platform and service health following implementation
  • Support controlled out-of-hours maintenance where required
  • Help improve standard change procedures and support Service Engineers in delivering repeatable changes safely

Patching and vulnerability remediation

  • Support and troubleshoot the customer's established patching and vulnerability-remediation processes across Windows, Linux and cloud platforms
  • Investigate failed or incomplete patch deployments and resolve the underlying technical issues
  • Support emergency remediation of critical vulnerabilities where required
  • Validate service health following patching activity
  • Identify recurring failures and help improve or automate patching processes

Backup and disaster recovery

  • Investigate complex or recurring backup and recovery issues across the multi-cloud and hybrid estate
  • Support restore testing and scheduled disaster-recovery exercises
  • Validate recovery procedures and help maintain accurate technical runbooks
  • Identify weaknesses in backup or recovery arrangements and drive appropriate remediation
  • Escalate systemic or high-risk recovery issues where senior technical input is required

Automation and continual improvement

  • Identify repetitive operational activity that can be automated or eliminated
  • Build scripts, Infrastructure as Code and other automation to reduce manual effort and operational toil
  • Improve monitoring, alert quality, compliance reporting and routine remediation
  • Help prevent configuration drift and recurring operational issues
  • Contribute to the managed service continual-improvement backlog
  • Look for permanent engineering solutions rather than accepting repetitive manual activity as BAU

Knowledge and mentoring

  • Support and mentor Cloud and Infrastructure Platform Service Engineers
  • Produce and maintain clear technical runbooks and knowledge articles
  • Share troubleshooting methods and technical knowledge across the team
  • Help increase the number of issues resolved without unnecessary escalation
  • Work with the Platform Technical Lead to improve technical standards, documentation and ways of working

Requirements

  • Eligible to work in the UK
  • Willing to undergo a Baseline Disclosure Scotland check as a condition of employment
  • Able to attend customer site in Aberdeen when required
  • Able to participate in an engineering on-call/escalation model supporting 24×7 P1/P2 incidents
  • Comfortable operating production infrastructure where changes can have significant business impact

Technical skills and experience

We understand that no candidate will know every technology in the environment. We're looking primarily for strong production engineering fundamentals, good troubleshooting ability and broad cloud and infrastructure experience.
