About the job MECHANICAL ENGINEER / DESIGN ENGINEER - (CLEANTECH / MARINETECH)
A Senior Mechanical Engineer is needed to join GT Wings, an ambitious engineering led CleanTech and MarineTech company developing wind assisted propulsion systems that help commercial vessels cut fuel consumption and emissions.
Based in the Southampton area, this is a hands on, high ownership role within a small, expert team turning innovative concepts into production ready hardware now being deployed at sea.
GT Wings is at a pivotal stage. With one full scale AirWing already on the water and further systems in build, the focus has shifted firmly towards manufacturable, scalable delivery. The culture is engineering first, mission driven and practical. Ideas move quickly from CAD to fabrication, assembly and real world operation.
As Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will take ownership of key AirWing subsystems from early concept through to detailed design and manufacturing release. This is not a narrow design office role. You will balance creativity with rigour, ensuring every component is robust, elegant and ready for production in demanding marine environments.
Working closely with the Head of Engineering, you will produce 3D models, detailed manufacturing drawings and supporting calculations, while applying strong Design for Manufacture and Assembly principles. You will collaborate with international suppliers, support production activities, capture lessons learned and continuously improve design standards, cost and manufacturability. There is also scope to review and guide junior engineers where appropriate.
Key requirements: You should be a capable and commercially aware Mechanical Engineer, Senior Mechanical Engineer or Mechanical Design Engineer with a CV that demonstrates:
- Degree qualification in Mechanical, Structural or Marine Engineering
- 5 to 10 years experience designing mechanical systems within a manufacturing environment
- A track record of taking products from concept through to production, ideally within marine or offshore sectors
- Experience with fabrication, welding or large structural assemblies
- Strong understanding of Design for Manufacture and Assembly principles
- Proven experience driving cost reduction against defined targets
- Comfort operating in dynamic environments with real accountability
Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor or similar 3D CAD, exposure to class or certification requirements such as DNV or LR, experience designing large structures and knowledge of structural testing and validation would all be advantageous, as would fluency in Mandarin.
In return, you will join a scaling clean technology business where your work directly contributes to lower carbon shipping. Expect a salary of £45,000 to £60,000 depending on experience, meaningful ownership of real hardware, and the opportunity to grow with a company moving from first of kind installations towards wider commercial deployment.
