Position Summary:
The Senior Bookkeeper is responsible for end-to-end bookkeeping and financial reporting for a portfolio of clients, primarily churches and nonprofit organizations across Canada. This role owns monthly close deliverables, ensures accurate and compliant records under Canadian accounting standards, and provides proactive, high-quality client support.
The Senior Bookkeeper also mentors junior team members, reviews their work for accuracy, and helps strengthen processes to improve efficiency and consistency.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage end-to-end bookkeeping for a portfolio of clients (primarily churches, charities, and nonprofits across Canada).
- Maintain accurate books in QuickBooks (primarily QuickBooks Online), including coding, journal entries, and general ledger upkeep.
- Lead month-end close, including bank/credit card reconciliations and resolution of discrepancies.
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports in line with Canadian standards and firm procedures.
- Oversee AP/AR workflows, ensuring timely processing, follow-up, and clean supporting documentation.
- Oversee payroll processing and related compliance requirements, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Act as a primary client contact, answering questions and providing clear, practical bookkeeping guidance.
- Train, review, and coach junior bookkeepers, ensuring quality control and continuous process improvement.
Skills:
- Diploma or degree in Bookkeeping, Accounting, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of bookkeeping experience, preferably within CAD public practice environment.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks).
- Strong knowledge of bookkeeping principles and practices.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Familiarity with payroll processing and tax preparation is a plus.
