Job Title: Performance Ad Scriptwriter (E-commerce)
Why Join YAMU
Most scriptwriting roles ask you to write copy and hand it off. You deliver a draft, it goes into a review cycle, and you rarely find out if it worked.
This role is different.
Every script you write ships to a live campaign within days. You will see the hold rate data, the drop-off points, and the conversion impact from your own work. You will iterate based on real evidence, not a creative director's opinion. You will write for a brand doing $250 million in annual revenue, working alongside elite paid media strategists and UGC teams who test your scripts in live campaigns and come back with the numbers.
We are looking for someone who is not satisfied writing scripts no one can prove worked.
Job Overview
This is not a general copywriting role. You write scripts that make people stop scrolling, keep watching, and buy. You understand that a script is not good because it sounds good, it is good because it converts. You know the difference between a hook that generates curiosity and one that loses the viewer in two seconds. You have written scripts that drove significant, measurable revenue for ecommerce brands and you can prove it.
You will own the creative output for a portfolio of ecommerce brands, working closely with paid media strategists to produce scripts that are tested in live ads, iterated on based on performance data, and refined until they win. When a script underperforms, you read the hold rate curve, identify where viewers dropped, and rewrite. You do not guess. You do not hand off and disappear.
Key Responsibilities
Write performance ad scripts for ecommerce brands across Meta, TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram -- optimized for conversion, not aesthetics
Develop multiple hook variations per concept to maximize testing velocity and identify what stops the scroll
Write re-hooks and mid-video retention devices that maintain hold rate through the full script
Apply buyer psychology, storytelling structure, and curiosity frameworks to move viewers from awareness to purchase intent
Write CTAs that are specific, urgent, and matched to the offer and audience
Manage pacing in scripts -- knowing when to slow down for emotional impact and when to move fast to maintain attention
Collaborate with the UGC and creative teams to ensure scripts are written for the creator delivering them, not for a generic talent
Review ad performance data alongside paid media strategists and iterate scripts based on what the numbers show
Produce multiple script variations per brief to support structured creative testing
Maintain a documented library of winning scripts, hooks, and frameworks that the team can build on
Must Understand
Candidates must have working knowledge of the following -- these will be tested in the interview process:
Hook writing: what creates pattern interruption, curiosity, and an immediate reason to keep watching
Hold rate: how to structure a script so viewers do not drop off, and what causes drop-off at each stage
Re-hooks: how to recapture attention mid-video when hold rate typically falls
Storytelling: narrative structure applied to short-form performance ads -- problem, agitation, solution, proof
Buyer psychology: pain points, desire, social proof, loss aversion, and how each translates into script decisions
CTAs: how to write calls to action that are specific and urgent without sounding forced
Pacing: how script length, sentence structure, and delivery direction affect retention and conversion
Platform differences: what works on TikTok versus Meta versus YouTube Shorts and why
AI at YAMU
We are building AI-native workflows across every function. For this role, that means using AI actively in research, hook generation, brief analysis, and iteration -- not as a shortcut, but as a multiplier that lets you produce more creative at higher velocity without dropping the quality bar.
You should already be using AI tools in your daily writing workflow. In your application, name the tools you use and describe specifically how you use them. Generic claims of using AI will not be considered.
Requirements
Minimum 3 years writing scripts specifically for performance advertising -- general copywriting experience does not qualify
Proven track record of writing scripts that generated significant, documented revenue for ecommerce brands
Portfolio of winning scripts with revenue metrics and measurable business outcomes required -- applications without this will not be considered
Minimum one case study demonstrating the direct impact of your scripts on a high-growth ecommerce brand
References required
Proven experience working with high-growth ecommerce brands
Deep understanding of hooks, hold rate, re-hooks, storytelling, buyer psychology, CTAs, and pacing
Ability to write scripts for UGC creators -- adapting tone, vocabulary, and delivery direction to match the creator's natural voice
Ability to iterate quickly based on ad performance data -- you treat every script as a test, not a finished product
Active AI tool use in your daily writing workflow -- named tools and specific use cases required in the application
Strong written English -- your scripts will be used directly in ads running to US consumers
Existing network of high-performing creative specialists -- copywriters, scriptwriters, or creative strategists -- that you can refer or introduce
Ability to build and lead a script team as the creative function scales
Bonus Skills
Experience writing scripts for direct response video ads at scale -- 20 or more variations per month
Familiarity with creative testing frameworks and how to structure script variations to isolate variables
Experience writing for specific ecommerce verticals: health and wellness, home goods, apparel, or consumer products
Understanding of offer framing and how product positioning changes based on the audience and funnel stage
Experience briefing and directing UGC creators on delivery, tone, and pacing based on the script
Your Attributes
You do not write scripts based on what sounds clever. You write based on what converts. You know the difference and you have the results to prove it.
You are obsessed with the first three seconds. You understand that a script can be brilliant from the fourth second onward and still fail because the hook lost the viewer.
You treat performance data as creative feedback. When a script underperforms, you read the hold rate curve, identify where viewers dropped, and rewrite accordingly. You do not guess.
You write fast and revise based on evidence. You are not precious about your work -- you care about what performs, not what you were most proud of when you finished it.
You understand that writing for a UGC creator means writing in their voice, not yours. You adapt naturally and the final script sounds like the creator, not a copywriter.
You communicate clearly and proactively with the creative and paid media teams. You do not deliver a script and disappear -- you stay close to performance and push for iteration.
You want to see your work ship, see what it did, and make it better. Feedback loops motivate you. Waiting for approval does not.
