Staff Engineer (Ruby on Rails)

Our client, a growing start-up based in Austin, TX is looking for an Onsite Sr. Backend Engineer with deep expertise in Ruby on Rails to join their team & drive technical innovation and scale our platform for the future. 

Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience in Ruby on Rails for production applications (not side projects).
• Strong expertise in AWS serverless architecture (Lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway, RDS, S3, Beanstalk).
• Proficiency in Git/GitHub and modern CI/CD pipelines.
• Deep understanding of software design patterns, scalability principles, and security best practices.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

Your Role and Responsibilities

• Lead backend development and architectural decisions using serverless infrastructure.
• Design scalable, reliable, and high-performance systems.
• Mentor engineers and foster a culture of excellence and continuous learning.
• Write clean, scalable Ruby code.
• Build robust APIs with AWS API Gateway.
• Manage integrations with third-party services and applications.
• Enhance system monitoring, observability, and alerting.
• Troubleshoot and resolve performance bottlenecks and bugs.
• Collaborate with front-end engineers (Vue or React experience is a plus) for seamless API integration.
• Champion best practices in testing, code quality, and DevOps.

Bonus Points:

• 3+ years of experience as a Senior/Staff Engineer or Technical Lead in high-scale production environments.
• Familiarity with front-end frameworks like Vue or React.
• Proven leadership experience mentoring engineers and driving technical decisions.
• Experience with testing frameworks and automated test strategies.

The Setup

You'll work directly with the CEO as the only onsite engineer alongside a distributed team of two mobile developers, three backend engineers, and one QA automation specialist (based in Colombia and Chile).
