The first is a comprehensive diagnostic tampon which analyses the vaginal microbiome, identifying imbalances around vaginal infections, STIs and fertility.

The second is the world's first online Period Pain Clinic with science-backed pain management solutions and world class aftercare from our network of vetted, empathetic physicians who specialise in chronic pelvic pain. Our tool enables the faster diagnosis of chronic pelvic pain conditions, including endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids and other, meaning anyone who experiences pain can get answers, treatments and get their life back on track. We encourage women & AFAB folks to talk about their experiences and help find solutions rather than excuses - we know it's not just period pains.

Daye is now entering an exciting period of growth and expansion, with a focus on scaling our digital acquisition channels and helping Daye scale spend effectively on performance channels.

About the Opportunity

Daye is an operationally complex business. The majority of our processes are vertically integrated. The Product team at Daye covers a variety of domains from New Product Design and Development, Prototyping, Product and User Testing, Material Research and Innovation, Machine Design & Automation, Process and Supply Chain Validation, Product Packaging.

We're looking for high-growth-potential individuals, who are driven and curious. Joining our team can provide unique learning opportunities across the full end-to-end product development cycle - from ideation, design, prototyping, validation, supply chain, production and market release. You will be working closely with our Physical & Digital Product and Operations teams, on ensuring that Daye's products and machines are delivered to spec, within the agreed timelines and budgets, serve genuine customer needs, and deliver on our mission to bridge the gender gap in medical research.

As a Design Engineer you will have the exciting opportunity to cover the domains of:

  • Bringing to life novel, better functioning and sustainable products for menstrual, vaginal and hormonal health - covering ideation, concept development, sketching, design, CAD modelling, prototyping, 3D printing, bench-top and consumer testing
  • Advancing the key product development and engineering projects at Daye, including, but not limited to:
    • Daye tampons
    • Daye menstrual pads
    • Daye tampon applicator
    • Daye tampon machine
    • Daye pads machine
    • Daye applicator mould
    • Daye packaging
    • R&D grants
    • Product, material and consumer testing
  • Conducting and supporting product, mechanical and user testing and continuously incorporating patient feedback in design iterations
  • Experimenting with novel materials to ensure we minimise waste, and microplastic pollution, and deliver on our sustainability commitments as a B Corp
  • Working to beat industry monopolies by bringing manufacturing in house
  • Ensuring your work is customer-centric and reflects real product needs

What you'll be doing?

  • Collaborate on the development of new products and associated materials to continually disrupt the menstrual and gynae healthcare industry
  • Be a champion for the voice of the customer
  • Assist the strategic planning and development of the company with unique ideas and individual perspectives
  • Supplier and contractor sourcing, communication and assessment
  • Liaising with automation companies and partners constructing Dayes machines and tools
  • Operating within medical device frameworks (ISO13485, GMP)
  • Ensuring proper documentation of all your work, including design version records, validation and testing documentation, milestone documentation
  • Ensure that Dayes products and machines can be made accessible to women and entrepreneurs in a broad range of socio-economic contexts around the world as the company wishes to make its early prototypes available to communities in the Global South and the continent of Africa
  • Support the maintenance of a company-wide ISO 13485 Quality Management System
  • Manage Design History file creation for medical Device classified Products
  • Support the writing and submission of funding grants.

What you need to bring to the role?

A driven and agile product design engineering wizard with a passion for gynae health. Great interpersonal skills will enable you to develop strong relationships across the business, ensuring that Design Engineering best practices and data-driven decision-making sit at the core of Dayes product development engine.

  • Highly proficient CAD skills (ideally SolidWorks)
  • Technical and design background - a design, mechanical, automation, biomedical engineering, product design, industrial design, material science Bachelor or Master degree from an accredited University
  • Hands-on engineering project management experience in startup and/or scale-up business including being comfortable with managing budgets, timelines and product deliverables
  • Experience in developing novel and sustainable materials or polymers would be a bonus
  • Experience designing, managing and successfully taking new products to market, medical device experience will be considered a bonus
  • Experience in planning and conducting user and mechanical validation tests.
  • Commitment to working with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Objectives Key Results (OKRs)
  • Comfortable working with projects in the R&D phase, dealing with ambiguity and shifting priorities
  • Expert communication and presentation skills are required.
