Earthworks is hiring a Communications Associate to join our dynamic and growing team! This position will focus on providing communications support with owned and earned media for our Energy portfolio, specifically in the areas of corporate accountability and the organization’s Energy Field investigations work. The role requires the ability to collaborate effectively with staff and among partners in a coalition. An ideal candidate for this position will have three to five years of experience in strategic or advocacy communications. The position reports to the Senior Communications Manager for Energy, within the Communications Department.

Core Responsibilities

  • Distill complex issues into more broadly consumable content;

  • Develop and execute communications plans -- with pertinent comms and other staff -- for major program initiatives/releases/launches; including drafting & pitching Op-Eds, press releases and developing online content.

  • Identify, maintain, build and track relationships with key reporters, outlets, and media allies;

  • Ensure that our website and EARTHblog materials reflect and emphasize our priorities and messaging, and seek out opportunities for cross-posting on partner sites and other media platforms;

  • Work with program staff, develop social media content/threads and select energy program social media issues/articles for digital organizers to post.

  • Ensure the values of equity and justice are centered in communications work and products, particularly with respect to frontline groups and marginalized communities

Additional Responsibilities

*These responsibilities support two portfolios: Corporate Accountability and Energy Field Team.

  • Assist in building a broader understanding of industry power dynamics;

  • Identify and insert narrative changing stories and arguments, consistent with Earthworks energy team’s strategies and positions, into public discourse;

  • Engage in rapid response, specifically to real world events, news stories, and government and/or industry announcements.

  • Amplify Energy Field optical gas images (OGI) of pollution & other field findings to craft impactful communication outputs that advance Earthworks energy team’s goals;

  • Develop accessible content for community education and use;

  • Assist in creating media opportunities and tracking media coverage.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of professional media and/or communications experience, preferably in a non-profit, advocacy, or social justice organization;

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;

  • Ability to work independently AND in a highly collaborative environment where teamwork, collegiality, and self-motivation are necessary for success;

  • Strong project management skills, coupled with sharp attention to detail, and a demonstrated ability to effectively manage competing priorities;

  • Multicultural competence, cultural humility and a commitment to working with people from a variety of backgrounds, especially ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds;

  • Experience with social and digital media communications.

Location, Travel, and COVID-19

The location for this position is remote in the United States.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $66,000-$70,000 annually, depending on experience. Earthworks provides full-time staff with a competitive package of benefits, including employer-paid medical, vision, dental, life, and disability insurance. Additionally, Earthworks offers unlimited paid leave, paid parental leave, and a 403(b) retirement plan (with a 5% match after one year of employment). After five years of employment, staff are eligible for a 12 week, fully paid sabbatical.

Bargaining Unit Status

Earthworks is a union workplace; our employees are represented by Earthworkers Unite/ Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). This position is included in the bargaining unit.
