ROLE PURPOSE

CIMMYT is seeking an accomplished communications professional ready to shape how the world understands and values science for development. This role connects global audiences to the people, progress, and partnerships that drive CIMMYTs mission across Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

As part of a leadership team committed to inclusive progress, youll work directly with the Chief Engagement Officer to elevate CIMMYTs visibility and voice, reaching donors, partners, and the public with clarity and purpose. Your leadership will influence how CIMMYT tells its story, from the lab to the field, from farmers to funders.

LOCATION

Texcoco, México. The role is based at CIMMYT headquarters and requires close collaboration across time zones and regions.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

As Global Head of Communications, you will lead CIMMYTs global strategy to shape how the organization shows up, across regions, platforms, and audiences. Your role will span internal and external engagement, creative direction, team leadership, and executive visibility.

Strategic Communication

  • Design and implement a global communications strategy aligned with CIMMYTs mission and stakeholder engagement goals.
  • Provide strategic counsel to the executive team and guide donor and partner-facing communications.
  • Coordinate with partners and stakeholders on cross-cutting initiatives, global campaigns, and visibility efforts.
  • Lead crisis communication planning and represent the function in Board-level conversations.

Media, Digital, and Editorial Direction

  • Oversee media relations, serve as spokesperson, and prepare executives and scientific leaders for public engagement.
  • Guide digital strategy, platforms, and campaigns with regular performance reporting.
  • Maintain consistent editorial standards and ensure brand-aligned,high-quality storytelling across all channels.

Internal and Executive Communications

  • Strengthen internal communication across CIMMYTs global teams to support staff alignment and engagement.
  • Support the visibility of CIMMYTs leadership through executive messaging, events, and public speaking preparation.

Team and Regional Leadership

  • Lead and grow a high-performing, multicultural communications team across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
  • Align regional strategies to global goals and ensure coordination across functions.
  • Oversee recruitment, budget, operations, and the development of external vendors and creative partners.

Strategic Content Leadership

  • Leads the creation of core materials that clearly and consistently reflect the organizations mission, voice, and global relevance.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

  • A minimum of 15 years experience in communications, with increasing strategic responsibility, ideally across nonprofit, development, and private/corporate sectors.
  • Experience working in or with the Global South.
  • Exceptional storytelling and editorial skills, including the ability to translate complex science into human-centered narratives.
  • Expertise in media relations, digital communications, and cross
    cultural stakeholder engagement.
  • Strong understanding of communications as a strategic driver for fundraising, influence, and impact.
  • A background in agricultural research, sustainability, development or science-based organizations is a strong asset.
  • Experience managing multicultural teams and global strategies.
  • A collaborative spirit and commitment to integrity, equity, and CIMMYTs mission.
