Electrician (3 phase)
Job Description:
Our client is seeking a qualified and experienced 3-phase electrician to join their team in Umthatha, Eastern Cape. The successful candidate will be responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing three-phase electrical systems and equipment across their operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Installation & Maintenance
- Install, maintain, and repair three-phase electrical systems, motors, and equipment
- Read and interpret electrical drawings, blueprints, and technical diagrams
- Install and connect electrical distribution boards, switchgear, and control panels
- Wire and commission new equipment and machinery
- Perform routine preventative maintenance on electrical systems
Testing & Troubleshooting
- Test electrical systems and circuits to identify faults and malfunctions
- Diagnose and repair electrical breakdowns efficiently to minimize downtime
- Use testing equipment including multimeters, megohmmeters, and phase rotation testers
- Conduct earth leakage and insulation resistance testing
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all electrical work complies with South African National Standards and Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements
- Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used
- Complete Certificates of Compliance (CoC) where required
- Identify and report potential electrical hazards
- Implement lockout/tagout procedures during maintenance
General Duties
- Respond to emergency breakdowns and electrical faults
- Liaise with management, engineers, and other trades personnel
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition
- Advise on electrical upgrades and improvements
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Essential
- Valid Trade Test Certificate (Wireman's License) or equivalent qualification
- Minimum 3-5 years post-qualification experience working with three-phase electrical systems
- Registration with the Department of Employment and Labour as a qualified electrician
- Valid driver's license (Code 08 or higher)
- Strong understanding of South African electrical regulations and standards
Technical Skills
- Proficient in working with 380V/400V three-phase systems
- Experience with motor control circuits, starters, and variable speed drives
- Knowledge of PLC systems and industrial automation (advantageous)
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical drawings
- Competent in the use of electrical testing and diagnostic equipment

- Standard working hours with overtime as required
- May be required to participate in standby and call-out roster
- Work in various environments including workshops, factories, and outdoor sites
- Exposure to potential electrical hazards and industrial environments
