Compliance Officer - (Mining Operations)

 Job Description:

The Compliance Officer ensures mining operations meet all legal, regulatory, and licensing requirements. Acting as custodian of the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) and related statutory documentation, the role involves conducting internal audits, overseeing document control systems, and monitoring mining sites for compliance. 

The Compliance Officer will be responsible for controlling external audits with the DMPR and other regulatory bodies. While environmental expertise is supported by external consultants, the Compliance Officer plays a key role in safeguarding operational integrity, regulatory adherence, and community development commitments (through the Social and Labour Plan implementation).

Key Responsibilities

Regulatory & Licensing Oversight

  • Maintain and safeguard DMPR Approved Mining documentation.
  • Verify compliance with Mineral Rights / Permits.
  • Compile and submit statutory returns and regulatory reports.
  • Track license conditions, renewal dates, and maintain compliance registers.
  • Monitor implementation of new requirements on the current mining sites
  • Monitor and implement Social and Labour Plans at the various mining sites and communities (site visits required)

Auditing & Inspection

  • Conduct proactive onsite audits of mining practices, equipment use, and documentation.
  • Monitor contractor compliance with safety and permitting requirements.
  • Review internal controls on the mining sites (sites visits required).
  • Assess financial provision guarantees to ensure adequate mine rehabilitation funding.
  • Attend and represent the company at external audits with DMPR and other government departments

Document Control & Compliance Monitoring

  • Implement and manage document control systems to ensure version integrity and accessibility.
  • Maintain accurate compliance records and audit trails.
  • Monitor mining sites for adherence to operational and regulatory standards.
  • Prepare compliance reports and present findings to management and
    regulators.

Environmental & Safety Governance (with consultant support)

  • Liaise with environmental consultants on EMPR updates and audits.
  • Participate in incident investigations involving environmental or safety breaches.
  • Ensure consultant outputs align with legislative requirements and company standards.

Qualifications & Skills

Education:

  • A bachelor's degree in law, or Bachelor of Commerce with accountin

Experience:

  • 3 to 5 years of legal, compliance, or hands-on operational experience within mining, OR completed articles with 3-to-5-year experience in accounting firm.

Key Skills:

  • Proven experience in internal auditing and document control.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and reporting skills.
  • Ability to monitor and enforce compliance across multiple sites.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
  • Excellent cross-department communication skills to navigate conversations between legal departments, production managers, and directors.
  • Advantageous knowledge of mining legislation and licensing frameworks.
