Our client is a well-established general insurance company in Singapore, with a strong presence in the commercial insurance market and a growing distribution network. The company is focused on sustainable portfolio growth, underwriting discipline, and long-term partnerships with intermediaries.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Head of Commercial Lines, the Deputy Head of Commercial Lines plays a key leadership role in driving profitable portfolio growth, overseeing underwriting quality, and strengthening distribution relationships across the commercial insurance segment.

This role combines strategic underwriting leadership, pricing discipline, portfolio management, and intermediary engagement, with people leadership responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Underwriting & Portfolio Management

  • Support the development and execution of product and underwriting strategies to drive sustainable growth and profitability
  • Implement and manage effective pricing strategies aligned with risk appetite and portfolio objectives
  • Perform risk assessment and underwriting across assigned commercial lines within delegated authority and agreed turnaround times
  • Monitor portfolio performance, analyze trends, and recommend corrective actions to optimize results
  • Ensure alignment between underwriting, reinsurance, and treaty programs to maximize risk efficiency

Business Development & Distribution

  • Work closely with brokers, agents, and distribution partners to secure profitable new business and retain renewal accounts
  • Drive new business acquisition through strong intermediary engagement, training sessions, and industry seminars
  • Strategize and execute business initiatives and campaigns jointly with Distribution to support growth objectives
  • Proactively recruit and develop new intermediaries to expand the distribution network
  • Establish and maintain strong, professional relationships with key intermediary partners

Market Intelligence & Strategy

  • Conduct market research and competitor analysis across commercial insurance product classes
  • Identify market trends, emerging risks, and opportunities to enhance competitiveness and innovation
  • Lead or participate in solution-driven initiatives that improve customer experience and address market needs

People Leadership & Stakeholder Management

  • Lead, motivate, and develop the commercial lines underwriting team to achieve business targets and KPIs
  • Foster strong collaboration with internal stakeholders to improve distribution and operational efficiency
  • Coordinate internal resources, service levels, and processes to meet partner and client expectations
  • Lead annual joint-planning processes with intermediaries, including performance objectives and financial targets

  • Perform additional duties as assigned from time to time

Requirements

  • Diploma or Degree in a relevant discipline, with professional qualifications in General Insurance
  • 8–10 years of hands-on underwriting experience in Commercial Lines, covering areas such as:
    • Fire & Property
    • All Risks
    • Public / Product Liability
    • CAR / WIC
    • Group Personal Accident (GPA) / Group Benefits (GBT)
  • Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks and industry best practices
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills
  • Resourceful, independent, and able to learn processes and systems quickly
  • Comfortable working under pressure and managing tight timelines

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: SGD 7,000 – 10,000 per month (commensurate with experience)
