Senior legal Lawyer

 Job Description:

R77 Global have been exclusively engaged to support our client, a well-established organisation based in Malta, in hiring a Senior Legal professional to join their in-house Legal team. The role focuses on contract drafting and negotiation, regulatory interpretation, and supporting key functions such as Credit, Risk, Compliance, IT and Operations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Review, draft, and negotiate contractual agreements and ancillary documentation, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations (including DORA, BRRD, GDPR, etc.) and the clients internal legal standards.
  • Assist in compiling and maintaining the clients Contracts Register (on JIRA) and Contracts Repository, ensuring records are accurate and up to date.
  • Draft and periodically review template agreements, letters, and other documentation used by the client.
  • Provide timely, practical legal advice to internal departments (e.g. Credit, IT, Risk, Compliance, HR, Products, Operations) on matters within their remit.
  • Draft and review internal policies and manuals relevant to the Legal Department.
  • Forward finalised documentation for the CEOs signature and ensure execution protocols are followed.
  • Review and advise on credit agreements, sanction letters, and related security documentation.
  • Support the Credit Department with legal advice, including on the structure of agreements, to align with the clients requirements and protect its interests.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external lawyers and notaries on credit-related matters, including maintaining and updating relevant internal registers.
  • Assist in maintaining manuals and guidance documents related to security collection and credit procedures in Malta and other EU jurisdictions.
  • Oversee litigation proceedings and attend court sittings, providing information on behalf of the client where required.

Requirements

  • Strong legal drafting, research, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to interpret and apply regulatory requirements (e.g. DORA, BRRD, GDPR, Banking Act, Companies Act).
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to explain legal concepts clearly to non-lawyers.
  • Proactive, reliable, and capable of working both independently and as part of a team.
  • High ethical standards, professional integrity, and respect for confidentiality.

Education and Experience

  • Master of Laws (LL.M.) or equivalent degree, with a warrant to practise law in Malta (or in an EU Member State).
  • Minimum 23 years post-qualification experience, ideally within banking, financial services, or a law firm with exposure to banking, credit, or litigation.
  • Demonstrated experience in contract drafting/review and regulatory interpretation.
  • Reliable and willing to take ownership of tasks and requests within their remit.
  • Familiarity with MFSA and ECB regulatory frameworks is considered an asset.
