Director of East Power Supply & Trading

 Job Description:

Due to a recent acquisition and our market entry into the Eastern U.S. power markets, we have an opportunity for a skilled and energetic Director of East Power Trading & Wholesale Ops to lead our post-acquisition strategy. This includes team building, market participation, power and renewables procurement, risk management, and influencing the evolution of our trading and analytics systems strategy for Eastern power markets.

The ideal candidate will be a commercially minded, data-driven power markets practitioner and strategic thinker who can lead effectively while also acting as an individual contributor when needed. This role demands strong leadership, cross-functional coordination, and the ability to drive results in a fast-paced, startup-like environment.

This position is part of Rhythms Trading & Wholesale Ops function, which currently manages a large load and behind-the-meter solar portfolio in ERCOT. The role will work closely with Data Science, Data Engineering, Pricing, and Finance teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Integrate, lead, and manage Rhythms East Power Trading & Wholesale Ops function during and post-acquisition
  • Oversee power and renewables procurement for Rhythms load portfolio, position and risk management, structuring, and wholesale counterparty relationships across Eastern U.S. power markets
  • Direct hedging strategy for forward and cash load books; develop and execute auction bidding strategies
  • Oversee ISO market participation including demand bids, FTR auctions, capacity auctions, and coordinate with Legal and Finance to ensure ISO accounts are managed and compliant
  • Ensure market risks are managed within the companys risk policy, gross margins are effectively hedged, and renewable exposures remain compliant
  • Model and manage convex risk exposures in line with the companys risk appetite; lead related analytics and options hedging activities
  • Ensure wholesale and risk components are marked accurately each day; coordinate with Middle Office and Finance to keep pricing curves current and accurate
  • Collaborate with Technology, Data Engineering, and Data Science teams to establish and execute a strategy for trading, risk, and algorithmic bidding systems, and lead the development of supporting software for Northeast power markets
  • Monitor wholesale regulatory developments and communicate market design changes or impactful events to company leadership
  • Work closely with Middle Office and Technology teams to ensure availability and transparency of automated position, mark-to-market, and accuracy reporting
  • Recruit and develop personnel to build an industry-leading energy trading and wholesale operations team

Experience and qualifications

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in business, finance, science, or engineering
  • 10+ years of experience in electricity or natural gas markets, with progressive responsibility in trading and risk management roles
  • 5+ years of experience in electricity supply and trading across Eastern U.S. markets with a focus on PJM and/or ISO-NE specifically managing load portfolios.
  • Proven experience managing physical operations and market participation in PJM, ISO-NE, or NYISO
  • Deep understanding of portfolio management best practices, options theory, managing convexity risks, and hedging strategies
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills with a passion for data-driven and automated solutions
  • Demonstrated project management and team leadership capabilities, with excellent communication skills
  • The following are considered strong assets:
  • Experience with physical operations of Load Serving Entities and ISO tariffs
  • Up-to-date knowledge of PJM and/or ISO-NE market fundamentals
  • Experience with Yes Energy or Enverus products
  • Familiarity or passion for Python, Julia, ML libraries (e.g., Scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow), Databricks, Snowflake, SQL, or advanced BI tools
  • Understanding of the wholesale regulatory landscape and upcoming design changes
  • P&L responsibility

  • This position is remote-enabled. Preference for Houston-based candidates.
