RCCs innovative and professional program includes a Farm to Table vegetable garden and perennial plant program that enhance the member experience at one of BCs premier golfing venues.


About this Opportunity

The Assistant Horticulturist, reporting to the Lead Horticulturalist and Assistant Superintendent, are responsible for the daily maintenance and upkeep of RCCs gardens and vegetable garden. This is a hands-on, outdoor role requiring physical stamina and a strong work ethic. The successful candidate will be detail-oriented with the ability to work independently and safely. Successful team members will possess a strong sense of respect, integrity, engagement, accountability, and collaboration. They will strive for day-to-day excellence in all that they do by demonstrating professionalism, promoting teamwork, taking ownership, and working honestly.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with planning, ordering, and maintaining plant materials, flowers, and horticultural supplies.
  • Maintaining and caring for all flower beds, hanging baskets, and landscaped areas through planting, weeding, pruning, mulching, and soil preparation.
  • Apply fertilizers and soil amendments and support ongoing soil health programs.
  • Monitor plant health and assist with the identification and control of plant pests and diseases.
  • Support the design, installation, and improvement of landscaped areas across the golf course and clubhouse grounds.
  • Assist with seasonal planting programs and small landscape improvement projects.
  • Maintain accurate daily records related to horticultural activities and plant care.
  • Operate landscaping equipment such as blowers, mowers, trimmers, and edgers safely and effectively.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas and assist with general grounds upkeep.
  • Assist the turf care team and perform general labour duties related to horticulture and grounds maintenance as required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and perform repetitive tasks including kneeling, bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods.
  • Ability to operate and carry equipment such as a backpack blower for extended periods.


Qualifications:

  • A background, training, or interest in horticulture. A combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Previous gardening, landscaping, or groundskeeping experience preferred (but willing to train the right candidate).
  • Having previous golf course or nursery experience is an asset.
  • Knowledge of West Coast Plant ID is an asset.
  • Irrigation system knowledge is an asset.
  • Ability to lift objects weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in quality work.
  • To be physically fit, reliable, hardworking and committed to doing a great job.
  • Ability to learn new tasks and skills efficiently.
  • Has a positive attitude and willingness to help with various tasks.
  • Able to communicate clearly with management and staff.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • A professional presentation.
  • Reliable, punctual, and safety-conscious.
  • Must hold a valid BC Drivers License.


More information on the role:

  • Hours of Work: 30-40 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
  • Start Date: April/May (flexible)
  • General Shift Timings: Early morning, starting between 5-7am until 1-3pm (based on daylight).
  • Job Environment: On-site only, outdoors.
  • Ability to commute: Richmond, BC - reliably commute to Number 4 road and Steveston Hwy Richmond BC. No public transportation is available to the shop. Personal cars will have free parking available.
  • Work permit/visa/ ability to work in Canada is mandatory.
