Role Overview:

We are seeking a highly analytical and experienced Reinsurance Underwriter to join our dynamic team, specializing in Property and Engineering lines of business. The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing, pricing, and accepting reinsurance risks in these classes, contributing to the profitable growth of our portfolio. This role requires a deep understanding of complex technical risks, strong relationships with brokers and cedents, and a commitment to sound underwriting principles.

Key Responsibilities;

  • Risk Assessment and Analysis:
  • Analyze and evaluate facultative and treaty reinsurance submissions for Property (including commercial property, industrial all-risks, and business interruption) and Engineering (including construction all-risks, erection all-risks, machinery breakdown, and electronic equipment).
  • Conduct thorough technical assessments of underlying exposures, including natural catastrophe perils, fire, and other hazards.
  • Review policy wordings, clauses, and endorsements to ensure clarity of coverage and alignment with our risk appetite.
  • Utilize company pricing tools, models, and actuarial data to develop adequate and competitive pricing for reinsurance proposals.
  • Prepare and issue quotations and formal offers to brokers and ceding companies in a timely and professional manner.
  • Negotiate terms and conditions with clients to secure profitable business while maintaining underwriting discipline.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of the underwriting strategy for the Property and Engineering portfolio.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, including loss ratios, premium income, and accumulations, against the business plan.
  • Identify and report on market trends, emerging risks, and competitor activity.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with reinsurance brokers and ceding company underwriters.
  • Act as a key technical resource and point of contact for clients, providing expert advice and solutions.
  • Participate in market meetings, industry events, and client visits to promote our company and develop new business opportunities.
  • Ensure all underwriting activities are conducted in compliance with company guidelines, internal controls, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and complete underwriting files and documentation.
  • Collaborate with other internal departments, including claims, actuarial, and finance, to ensure seamless service delivery.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in direct or reinsurance underwriting, with a significant focus on Property and/or Engineering lines.
  • Proven track record of profitable underwriting and portfolio growth.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and make sound judgments.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of reinsurance principles, practices, and contract wordings.
  • A well-established network of contacts within the reinsurance broker community.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with underwriting and pricing software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional designations such as Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) or Associate in Reinsurance (ARe).
  • Experience with catastrophe modeling and exposure management tools.
  • International underwriting experience and multilingual abilities are a plus.
  • A proactive and results-oriented individual with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
